National Selector Chaugai Resigns

National cricket selector Sushil Chaugai has resigned from his post. It is believed that Chaugai, father of national cricketer Kaniska Chaugai and the mentor of the Kalaiya Cricket Club, was unhappy with the process of selection of the cricket teams.

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) in a press release said it has accepted the resignation of Chaugai and thanked him for his contributions during his tenure.

CAN has also extended the tenure of the selection committee headed by Bijay Sharma until further decision. The tenure of the committee ended on Sept 29.

Chaugai, who holds the honor of being the first chairman of the first ever national selection committee was later only appointed as the member of the committee.

This is the excerpts from his email sent to NepalCricket.com regarding his resignation: “My resignation has come due to application of the rule which says a person can’t be in selection committee if he accepts any post relating to CAN. Since I am Bara district president, I’ve been asked to accept whether President of Bara district or member in selection committee, I opted the first because I think I’m needed most in the district.”

He added: “I don’t agree that the member in selection committee is for name only. Of late, the member from outside valley are not being called regularly probably because of lack of money or may be for the promotion of capital people.”

“The authority of CAN has always overlooked my dedication. Anyway thanks to everybody,” Chaugai added.

Meanwhile, a few cricketers have complained about the unfair selection of the regional teams in the ongoing Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament. The regional teams are selected by regional selection bodies.

A visitor from Nepalgunj who wished to be known as ‘unknown well wisher of Nepali cricket’ emailed saying the regional selection had been unfair. “Two sons of the treasurer are in the team, one of which was studying in Kathmandu and didn’t play the district level game,” he said.

Kushal from Biratnagar also complained about the selection. “The selection of U-19 has not been done fair as far as I’m concerned,” he wrote. “Some of the players having no contributions and performance have been included in the team.”

NepalCricket.com has forwarded all such emails to CAN and has so far received no replies.
