The secretary of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Shashidutta Pandey, died on Saturday morning. Pandey, 58, was suffering from jaundice and died in the course of treatment at the Medicare Hospital, Chabahil at about 6:45 am. He was admitted to the hospital at midnight Friday.
He is survived by his father, mother, wife, one son and one daughter. “His funeral will be held on Monday as his son Sudhir willl return from the US on Monday,” said Sureshdutta Pandey, Pandey´s younger brother and national cricket coach.
Pandey was active in Nepali cricketing sector for about three decades. Before becoming CAN secretary, he worked as treasurer of the association for nearly two decades. He was sacked as treasurer during the active rule of the then King Gyanendra and was appointed secretary after restructuring of the association in 2006.
Pandey was one of the founders of the Gairidhara Cricket Club and later became president of the club. He played the club level cricket from YMCC in Kathmandu.
Pandey was felicitated with the lifetime achievement award by the International Cricket Council (ICC) along with four other CAN officials last month on the occasion of 100 years of ICC´s establishment. He was the assistant manager of Nepali national team during ACC Trophy held in Malaysia in 1996 and the ICC Trophy held in Canada in 2001. Likewise, he was Nepali team´s manager during the the ACC T20 held in Kuwait in 2007.
