Nary awarded Creative National Award

The woman cricket icon Nary Thapa has been awarded the Creative Special National Award. The U-19 captain received an appreciation letter and a Bajaj Kristal scooter as the prize amidst a function in Kathmandu.

Creative Hands along with Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF), Nepalgunj awarded Nary and her teammates Binu Budha, Sita Rana, Trishna Singh, Mamata Thapa and Manisha Rawal. The cricketers received an appreciate letter from taekwondo players Deepak Bista and Sangina Baidya.

Constituent Assembly Vice-president Purna Kumari Subedi handed over the key of the scooter to Nary.

Nary, delighted after receiving the award, thanked all her well-wishers. “I would like to thank all my well-wishers who supported me,” she said.

Nepal had won ACC Women´s U-19 Championship twice in 2008 and 2010 under her captaincy. She was also a vital member of the senior women´s national cricket squad, which finished runners-up in the ACC Women´s Championship held in 2007 after losing to Bangladesh in the final.

Nary is also the skipper of Region No 5 Nepalgunj, which won the women´s national cricket championship on Wednesday defeating Baitadi in the final. Nary also won the woman-of-the-series.

Nary’s parents were also felicitated during the function. On the same occasion, Nary’s mother Nirmala declared to provide cash support of Rs 10,000 for Hari Bahadur Rokaya Sports Journalist Award, a fund set up by the Rokaya himself.

Speaking on the occasion, the coordinator of the event and senior vice-president of the NSJF, Nepalgunj TS Thakuri said that they have been working for the development of sports in the country. He also lauded the role of mid-western region for the development of women cricket in Nepal.
