The International Cricket Council (ICC) Development Committee has decided to scrap the 10-team U-19 World Cup qualifiers.
The U-19 WC qualifiers to be held in Ireland from July 28 to August 9 will be the last one.
The ICC committee has made the decision to revert to the previous system of allocating one position to each region.
In earlier, U-19 World Cups some of the stronger associate nations missed out the World Cup due to the imbalance in strength of the various regions, CricketEurope said.
Cost is being cited as the main reason for the ICC decision – it costs $750,000 to host the ten team qualifying tournament, and the Development Committee are of the opinion that the money could be better employed elsewhere.
This year’s qualifiers will be competed by Ireland, Scotland, USA, Canada, Afghanistan, Nepal, Kenya, Namibia, Vanuatu and PNG. Six top teams will qualify to the U-19 WC.
