National Sports Council (NSC) entrusted former presidents of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) roles in the newly formed committee.
Immediate past President Binay Raj Pandey has been appointed as the patron while former President Jay Kumar Nath Shah has been appointed the advisor. (Update: Shah rejected appointment)
“NSC has decided to expand the ad hoc committee of the association to facilitate smooth functioning,” according to a press statement issued by the NSC.
NSC had dissolved the Pandey-led executive committee of the CAN and appointed UCPN (Maoist) Central Committee Member Tanka Angbuhang as its president on October 26.
NSC has asked the new committee to successfully hold the ACC Twenty20 Cup and general assembly within two months.
“NSC leadership had proposed it (post of patron) and I heard NSC appointed me. However, I don´t know the details,” said Pandey.
Pandey, who earlier said he would reject the role of the patron if it comes as ceremonial, was unaware of his nomination and reiterated earlier stance.
“If its (the patron role) ceremonial then its not worth accepting the responsibility,” said Pandey. “I can take the job only if I am given the active role,” he added.
Pandey said he should be given a complete authority in certain matters. “We had set particular standards and certain systems. I have initiated in bringing number of tournaments in Nepal due to my smooth relationship with international bodies. If these systems begin to break down, I should be given the authority to tackle it,” said the former CAN president.
According to a source, Pandey has been given the responsibility to ‘ensure smooth international relationships’ and advise on financial matters.
Meanwhile, NSC has appointed Upendra Bhattarai as CAN vice president. Bhattarai was vice president in the Pandey-led committee and he has been a close ally of Pandey.
Former national team captain Pawan Agrawal, Niranjan Rijal, Deepak Koirala, Dharma Sundar Bajracharya, Kiran Samsher Rana, Diwakar Ghale and Thakur Pratap Thapa are also added as members.
