Cricketer Shakti Gauchan has been nominated for the NSJF Popular Player of the Year Award.
Along with the 27-year-old senior cricketer, football’s forward 22-year-old Bharat Khawas, Aslesha Lissanevitch, 16, of tennis, Shakti Gauchan of cricket, Sabita Chaudhary of athletics and Ramila Tandukar, 15, of volleyball were also nominated for award.
The winner will be finalized through SMS voting during the Sports Award which will be held on July 4.
The NSJF Popular Player of the Year Award is one of the five major awards to be distributed during the NSJF Sports Award organized by Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF). The most prestigious annual awards honor sports persons on the basis of their performance.
According to NSJF President Niranjan Rajbanshi, the players were nominated for the category on the basis of popularity and fame they earned in Nepali year2068 BS.
Gauchan said that he was very much pleased with his nomination in the category.
“I used to vote for other friends during previous editions, but this time I have been nominated in the category for the first time,” Gauchan said.
Gauchan was nominated for making his spectacular comeback in the national team after a year and a half. He helped Nepal climb to the seventh position from 16th in the ICC T20 Ranking of the Associate and Affiliated Members as Nepal finished seventh in the ICC World T20 Qualifiers.
Gauchan had claimed 16 wickets during the tournament including a hat-trick. It was the first hat-trick by a Nepali male player at international level.
His popularity soared after he was called for a trial by IPL club Rajasthan Royals.
