Nepal’s historic Lords’ appearance brings victory against MCC

Every time Nepal cricket gets a global stage, it leaves no stone unturned to prove that it has the potential to become a global cricketing power. It was the same story on July 19, when Nepal XI took Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at the Lords’ Cricket Ground, also known as the Mecca of Cricket. For the record, Nepal bowled out MCC for 176 to register a 41-run win after scoring 217 for 8 in 50 overs. But, the match result isn’t as important as Nepal’s appearance at the Lords’ as it’s an honor & recognition for an Associate nation whose cricket board remains suspended by ICC. “All those years [of playing cricket], we never dreamed that we will get a… Read More

Paras – Sharad team up for highest run chase, beat Namibia again

Captain Paras Khadka hit a blistering century and Sharad Vesawkar’s patience half-century included the winning shot as Nepal recorded a highest run-chase to beat Namibia by 3 wickets in the ICC World Cricket League Championship match at the jam-packed TU Ground. Paras (103 off 94 balls) and Sharad (74 not out of 107 balls) scored 167 for third-wicket partnership in the middle overs which proved match-winning chasing Namibia’s 239 for 9. As it’s now customary for Nepali batsmen to give a nervous time for fans, the fall of Paras ensued 5 quick wickets and at one time looked like Nepal may lose the momentum but Sharad and Basanta Regmi held nerves to seal the victory in a nail-biting finish in… Read More

Sharad’s patient knock earns Nepal first WCLC win over Namibia

Sharad Vesawkar, when on form, knows how to win matches. It was evident in Nepal’s first win in the ICC World Cricket League Championship at the TU Cricket Ground, Kathmandu on April 16 against Namibia in front of the sold-out crowd. Sharad earned the accolades as the finisher when his hard-hitting was crucial when Nepal qualified for the first-ever ICC World T20 in 2014; and on Saturday, he played a patient knock to take Nepal to the five-wicket victory chasing Namibia’s 195 for 9. Sharad fittingly hit a four off JJ Smit’s first ball of 49th over to finish the match at 50* off 99 balls. His half-century is second in the tournament when with 200 runs in 5 innings he is… Read More

History for Bangladesh, Heartbreak for Nepal

Bangladesh was clear favorite to win on their home ground against Nepal, a qualifier team. Any team’s victory would’ve created a piece of history and it turned out that Bangladesh reached the first-ever semifinal of U19 Cricket World Cup with a tense six-wicket victory over Nepal. Nepal could’ve become the first Associate nation to reach the semifinal – an opportunity now left with Namibia who plays India in second quarterfinals on Saturday. Nepal elected to bat first and scored 211 for 9 in 50 overs with captain Raju Rijal getting 72 off 80 balls. Bangladesh went down to 98/4 in 28 overs before Zakir Hasan (75 not out) and captain Mehidy Hasan (55 not out) safely rescued the team to register… Read More

Undefeated India’s harsh lessons for Nepal in #U19CWC

Having already qualified for quarterfinals, Nepal had nothing to lose against India than a match (and possibly a weaker team in next round), but had a possibility of registering the biggest ever victory at the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup history. It didn’t happen this time as India taught Nepal a few lessons of cricket by completely thrashing the neighbour by 7 wickets at Mirpur in televised match. Nepal labored hard to get 169/8 in fog-delayed 48 overs match, and India reached the target in just 18.1 overs losing three wickets. (c) ICC Opener Rishabh Pant hit a whirlwind 78 off 24 balls as India topped Group D and captain Islan Kishan got 52. The pair added 124 in just 9.1 overs demolishing… Read More

Giantkiller Nepal beat New Zealand

Nepal missed 2014 U19 Cricket World Cup, but when they made a return this year, they made sure that they keep up the ‘giant killer’ tag intact by beating New Zealand by 32 runs in the very first match at Fatullah, Bangladesh. For the records, it’s Nepal’s 20th victory in the U19 Cricket World Cup in 38 matches and 7th against Test-playing nations. It’s also Nepal’s second victory against New Zealand in as many matches having beaten them by a wicket to win the Plate Championship in 2006. Nepal, which won the qualifying event in Malaysia last year to return to the World Cup after missing the previous tournament in 2014, bowled out the Kiwis for 206 after it was set… Read More

Forgettable outing

If memories can be erased, a memory that I will surely erase will be the Cricket World Cup 2015 Qualifiers. Not for that we failed to qualify for the World Cup or that we couldn’t be in top four with a hope of ODI status, but for the impact the results of the tournament could have on future of our cricket. With four losses in four matches, three heavy ones and one tight one, it’s now look very difficult that Nepal’s world ranking will improve. It couldn’t win next match, then either we remain at the same ranking or we’ll go down by a place. The finishing is crucial because International Cricket Council (ICC) is in the discussion to restructure… Read More

In an all important match, Afghanistan registered a 9-wicket victory ending Nepal’s chances to finish top of the group. The rainfall threatened a no-play but a 7-over-a-side match was played and Nepal proved no match to Afghanistan despite posting 73/3.

Inhuman Honors

Can honors be inhuman? My answer is yes, after seeing what Nepali cricket players went through on Wednesday. This might sound harsh, but Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is a body that doesn’t think of consequences of any action thus they fail to think beyond the day. The drama and mismanagement with the team on Wednesday in the name of honoring their achievement was simply a behavior that couldn’t be called human in nature. If you think I’m accusing, take this example: The World Cricket League Division 3 winning team returned home on Wednesday. They played six hard-fought matches in eight days before taking a flight back; they travelled more than a couple of days in economy class (if you have been… Read More

Luck is for the brave

Nepal stepped on Bermuda’s soil as the favorites to win the World Cricket League Division 3. After a couple of matches, it looked like Nepal would have to struggle to avoid relegation. The month changed after that and in May, Nepal came up with the performance that for many were simply unexpected. With the bravery within the field – and some luck – Nepal qualified to the Division 2 and World Cup qualifiers and is strongly poised to win the trophy! The journey was bumpy. USA had just two home-born players and one of them Steve Taylor ensured Nepal has the worst start possible. He scored 162 off 102 balls helping USA post 366 in 50 overs. The massive total… Read More

ACC T20 Cup: Nepal to start in flying colors

Nepal’s captain Paras Khadka believed his team will come up with flying colors in the ACC Twenty20 Cup that starting on the day of Fagu Purnima, the festival of colors. “We have prepared best and we are at very high level of confidence,” Paras said. “We want to start in the winning note and continue winning.” Nepal is playing Maldives, a team that had never defeated Nepal in any form and level, on Wednesday at the TU Cricket Ground. In the only T20 cricket played between the teams, Nepal defeated Maldives by 75 runs in the Asian Games, Gongzhou. “Strength is adaptation” When asked about strength of Nepali team, Paras said: “adaptiveness”. “Our training in Pokhara was good, we trained… Read More

Was there a plan?

Australia thrashed Nepal by 212 runs. Ireland beat Nepal by 14 runs. England outplayed Nepal by 200 runs. Sri Lanka defeated Nepal by 8 wickets. These were results of first four matches of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Australia. Anything odd? Yes, of course. This was first time Nepal lost four straight matches in six U19 CWCs. In 2000, it had lost three matches straight but it was Nepal’s debut and the Super League – the second round of top 8 teams – where Nepal lost matches to India, Sri Lanka and England.

In praise of Paras Khadka

“We can qualify to the World T20 Cup in 2014.” If anybody else has told me this, I would have eyed him as someone who has no idea about our cricket. But this was Paras Khadka, the skipper whom anyone keeping an eye on cricket can only praise. He said so publicly as soon as returning from UAE, when he led the team to an impressive seventh-place finish in the World T20 Cup qualifiers. This time, only two teams qualified but next time, six teams will proceed to the world stage from the qualifiers. “We finished seventh, a step ahead and we are in,” Paras told the media. The captain knew, perfectly, that his team has every chance to move… Read More

On Binod Das

Binod Das is out of the national team! On Tuesday, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced the preliminary squad for the World Cup Twenty20 Qualifiers, axing former captain Binod. This is the first time in almost 13 years that the cricketer from Bara was not considered for a team he is qualified to play for. This alone speaks a lot about his contribution to cricket in Nepal. I feel saddened by the news that he is not in the team but that doesn´t mean I am against the decision to axe him. I feel Binod has done so much for cricket, and has created enough ground to continue contributing to cricket, that it doesn´t matter whether he is in the… Read More

CAN, ask questions

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is busy planning for the general assembly and first-ever organizational election in its more than 50 years of history. It will elect a big executive committee full with promises. I believe the first agenda that the newly-elected committee should take up is the review of the ACC T20 Cup and Nepal´s performance.
