Ritu axed, Nary re-appointed captain

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) axed Ritu Kanaujiya, who captained the national women’s cricket team in last two events and re-appointed Nary Thapa. Ritu and three other national cricketers from the Asian Games squad did not find space in 18-member squad for the ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship to be held in Kuwait from February 18 to 25.

U-19 defeat Nepal APF in practice

Nepal Under-19 national cricket team defeated Nepal APF Club by four wickets in a practice match at the TU Cricket Ground on Tuesday. APF were bowled out for 154 in 40 overs and Nepal U-19 achieved the target in 36.1 overs losing six wickets. It’s the second victory for the U-19 team, preparing for the ACC Elite Cup, against the Armed Police Force team with the national team line-up.

Nary awarded Creative National Award

The woman cricket icon Nary Thapa has been awarded the Creative Special National Award. The U-19 captain received an appreciation letter and a Bajaj Kristal scooter as the prize amidst a function in Kathmandu. Creative Hands along with Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF), Nepalgunj awarded Nary and her teammates Binu Budha, Sita Rana, Trishna Singh, Mamata Thapa and Manisha Rawal.

Prithu to lead Nepal U-19

Prithu Baskota is all set to become the first cricketer to lead three level of age-group national team after he was named captain for the upcoming ACC U-19 Elite Cup. Prithu will lead the team that also consists of national players Rahul Kumar Biswokarma and Naresh Budhayar, the selection committee of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced.

Nepalgunj wins Wai Wai Women’s National

Nary Thapa is the icon of woman cricket and she once again proved it leading her Region No 5 Nepalgunj to the title off the wai Wai Women’s National Twenty20 Cricket Tournament at the TU Cricket Ground. Inspired by Nary’s unbeaten 37 and two wickets, Nepalgunj beat Region No 6 Baitadi by 37 in the final. Nary lifted the champions’ trophy along awards for best bowler and player of the tournament.

Nepalgunj to take Baitadi in final

Region No 5 Nepalgunj fixed the final date with Region No 6 Baitadi in the Wai Wai Women’s National Cricket Tournament. Sita Shahi’s all-round performance pulled off a 28-run victory for Nepalgunj against hosts Region No 3 Kathmandu while Baitadi thrashed Region No 4 Bhairahawa by 8 wickets in the semifinals played at the TU Cricket Ground.

Baitadi into semi with Janaki’s half-century

Region No 6 Baitadi thrashed Region No 1 Biratnagar by six wickets on Sunday in a crucial match to book semifinal berth in the Wai Wai Women’s National Cricket Tournament. Either team had the chance of qualifying for the semifinal with the win but Baitadi proved to be superior in the crucial match of group ‘B’ at the IOE Ground.

Nepalgunj qualify for semifinals

Region No 5 Nepalgunj booked a place in the semifinal of the Wai Wai Women´s National Twenty20 Cricket Tournament beating Region No 1 Biratnagar by eight wickets at the IOE Ground. Captain Nary Thapa took four wickets to bowl out Biratnagar for 43 in 14.3 overs and scored unbeaten 16 runs as Nepalgunj surpassed the total in 8 overs losing just two wickets.

Sarita takes Kathmandu to semifinal

Region No 3 Kathmandu entered the semifinal of the Wai Wai Women’s National Twenty20 Cricket Tournament beating Region No 7 Janakpur by 3 wickets in a nail-biting finish at IOE Ground while Region No 4 Bhairahawa topped the Group A table with third win in a row. Sarita Magar of Kathmandu was the hero of the victory who single-handedly took Kathmandu past Janakpur’s 72 in the last ball of the match.

Biratnagar, Nepalgunj register win

Region No 1 Biratnagar and Region No 5 Nepalgunj won their respective match in the Wai Wai Women´s National Cricket Tournament. Biratnagar defeated Region No 8 Pokhara by 25 runs while Nepalgunj upset Region No 6 Baitadi by 35 runs at the IOE Ground.

Bhairahawa confirms semifinal, Janakpur wins

Region No 4 Bhairahawa confirmed a place in semifinal of the Wai Wai Women’s National Twenty20 after beating Region No 3 Kathmandu by 22 runs at the IOE Ground, Pulchowk as Region No 7 Janakpur kept hopes alive beating Region No 2 Birgunj by 78 runs in Group A matches. Janakpur and Kathmandu will play on January 7 with the winners taking another semifinal spot from the group.

Kathmandu, Bhairahawa win in Women’s T20

The Wai Wai Women’s National Twenty20 Cricket Tournament began with emphatic victories to Region No 4 Bhairahawa and Region No 3 Kathmandu at the IOE Ground. Kathmandu needed just 6.4 overs to knock of Region No 2 Birgunj’s 33/8 to win by 9 wickets while Bhairahawa surpassed Region No 7 Janakpur’s 102/6 with four balls to spare for a 7-wicket victory.

Wai Wai Women’s national from Jan 4

The Wai Wai Women’s National Cricket Tournament begins on January 4 at the IOE Ground with all eight regional development committees participating. Eight teams are divided in two groups with top two teams after a round-robin league competing in the semifinals. The finals of the Twenty20 format event will be held on January 12.

Bhairahawa lift U-19 title

Region No 5 (Bhairahawa) outplayed defending champions Region No 2 (Birgunj) to lift the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament title at the TU Cricket Ground. Bhairahawa scored 263/8 in allotted 48 overs and bowled out Birgunj for mere 142 in 37.5 overs for a 121-run victory.

Birgunj, Bhairahawa to vie for U-19 title

Avinash Karn, who achieved the unique feat of taking all the 10 wickets in an innings during a group round match against Region No 6 Baitadi on Monday, bowled another magical spell on Thursday to steer Region No 2 Birgunj to the final of Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament. Karn took six wickets against Region No 3 Kathmandu as Birgunj registered a 37-run victory in the semifinal played at the Pulchowk Cricket Ground and set up a title clash against Region No 4 Bhairahawa. Bhairahawa secured a final berth defeating Region No 7 Janakpur by 89 runs at the TU Cricket Ground.

Janakpur stuns Biratnagar to go through

Region No 7 (Janakpur) stunned heavyweight Region No 1 (Biratnagar) to qualify for the semifinals of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament at TU Cricket Ground. Janakpur, playing the first national tournament after being separated as a new development region recently, reached the final four at expense of Biratnagar and Region No 5 (Nepalgunj). Janakpur now meets Region No 4 (Bhairahawa).

Avinash’s perfect 10

Left-arm pacer Avinash Karn became the second Nepali bowler to take all the 10 wickets in an innings as he bowled a magical spell for Region No 2 Birgunj on Monday at the TU Cricket Ground in the league round of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament. Karn claimed all the 10 wickets of Region No 6 Baitadi as Birgunj registered a 135-run victory, which took them into the semifinals of the tournament.

Bhairahawa, Kathmandu enter semifinal

Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) and Region No 3 (Kathmandu) confirmed berths in the semifinals of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament after victories on Sunday. Bhairahawa thrashed Region No 8 (Pokhara) by a huge margin of 174 runs at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur while Kathmandu defeated Region No 7 (Janakpur) by 68 runs at the Pulchowk Ground.

Jha guides debutants Janakpur to victory

An unbeaten half century from Chandan Jha helped debutants Region No 7 (Janakpur) register a three-wicket victory over Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) in the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket League at the TU Cricket Ground. Janakpur met the 237-run target with seven balls to spare as Jha hit 74 runs. Abhishek Sah (12) sealed the win with a four off Sunil Sunar.

Kathmandu, Bhairahawa continue streak

Region No 3 (Kathmandu) and Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) registered consecutive wins on the second day of the Wai Wai U-19 National League on Friday. Kathmandu defeated Region No 1 Biratnagar by nine wickets at the TU Cricket Ground while Bhairahawa eased past Region No 6 Baitadi by five wickets at the Pulchowk Cricket Ground.

U-19: Kathmandu, Bhairahawa win

The opening day of the Wai Wai U-19 National League saw some extraordinary performances as Region No 3 (Kathmandu) and Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) registered big victories. Subash Khakurel scored 140 as Kathmandu amassed 322/9 in 50 overs to beat Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) by 144 runs at the IOE Ground, Pulchowk. At TU Ground, Bibek Chaudhary took 7 wickets to bowl out Region No 2 (Birgunj) for 61 in 19.1 overs as Bhairahawa win by 60 runs.

Asiad: Nepal made Sri Lanka toil for win

Nepal nearly pulled out a shocking result in Asian Games 2010 cricket against Sri Lanka before losing the quarterfinal match by two wickets on Wednesday. Nepal ripped through Sri Lanka’s top and middle order batting making it 42/7 before tailenders saved the gold-medal favorite team from the embarrassment. Nepal had scored 72 in its 20 overs.

Nepal enters quarterfinals of Asiad

Nepal defeated Maldives by 75 runs in the Asian Games cricket on Monday to confirm a berth in quarterfinals. Although Nepal lost to Hong Kong by 30 runs on Sunday, heavy win against Maldives improved the run-rate and regardless of the result of the match between Hong Kong and Maldives, Nepal will finish among top two of the group. If Hong Kong defeat Maldives, Nepal as group runners-up will play Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The group winner will play Afghanistan. If Maldives defeats Hong Kong, then run-rate will come into play.

Asiad: Hong Kong beats Nepal

Hong Kong defeated Nepal by 30 runs in the Asian Games 2010. Both Nepal and Hong Kong have a game against Maldives and if Hong Kong beats Maldives it will proceed for the quartefinals against Afghanistan. Hong Kong won the toss and scored 115/7 in 20 overs. Nepal was restricted to 85/9 in 20 overs.

Dismal performance ends Nepali women’s Asiad

Nepali women cricket team ended the Asian Games 2010 campaign with dismal performance with just one win in three matches and were unable to reach the semifinals. They lost to Japan twice – once in league and next in quarterfinals and registered a win against Hong Kong.
