‘No other team is better than Nepal’
Although former Pakistani Test player Aftab Baluch coached Nepal only for a year leading the team in an international tournament, his contribution can not be underestimated. The 47-year old Karachi resident was seen supporting Nepal and watching every matches involving Nepal in the ongoing Youth Asia Cup. His 428 runs in an innings in a first class game is still the sixth highest score in first class cricket. Desperate Dias departs for Karachi
Sri Lankan coach of Nepal’s cricket team Roy Luke Dias left for Karachi, Pakistan today to join the rest of the team competing in the third Youth Asia Cup starting from July 14. Nepal are the defending champions. Dias, who could not fly with rest of the team due to the visa problem last Saturday, departed to Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh flight. From Dhaka, he will fly to Karachi after four hours of transit stop, according to Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).

Poor timing ruins birthday cricket
Nepal’s cricket captain Raju Khadka was found watching National League Football at the Dashrath Stadium after his side Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) were defeated by Region No 1 (Biratnagar) in the semifinal of Birthday Cup Cricket tournament last week. The national champions were defeated not because of their poor form, but ‘hard luck’ did the trick. Khadka’s inability to judge the turn of coin ruined them as the match against Biratnagar was decided on the toss of a coin.

Nepal’s prospect on Youth Asia Cup
BY PRAKASH PHUYAL: Nepal is at the verge of a great cricketing future. It has proved to the world that this tiny country on the lap of Himalayas will not only be known for Mt Everest, but also for its cricketing force. 18 players sorted out for U-19
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has selected 18 players from among 26 of those being trained in the closed camp for U-19 Asia Cup to be held in Karachi of Pakistan in third and fourth week of June, according to a press release issued by CAN. The final 14 players and team captain will be announced soon, said the release.

Closed camp for U-19 begins
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has selected 26 young probable players for the closed camp for U-19 Youth Asia Cup that will be held in Karachi of Pakistan during in third and fourth week of July. The tournament was initially scheduled to be held in Singapore but the SARS epidemic forced the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to shift the Youth World Cup selection tournament to Karachi.

Reformed CAN committee announced
National Sports Council (NSC) has announced a new ad hoc committee of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) retaining most of its former members including President Jai Kumar Nath Shah. Those who were in the dissolved committee and did not found any place in the new committee are Pramos Upadhaya (vice-president), Uma Karki (vice-president), Shahi Dutt Pandey (Treasurer), Damodar Nath Suwal (joint secretary), Rajendra Bahadur Bam, BS Gurung, Narendra Shrestha, BS Dhami and Anil Shah (all members).

Nepal, India U-19 set for Kathmandu Klash
The Under-19 teams of test powerhouse India and rookie Nepal will play the first ever one day match in the Himalayan kingdom today. The two teams is playing for Kathmandu Klash Trophy. The matches will be played with white balls and colour clothes. The Indian team arrived on Friday. There are two changes in the Indian team annouced earlier. Baroda decided to pull out its two key players – Irfan Pathan and Rakesh Solanki – for the Ranji Trophy final clash with Mumbai. Instead of Pathan and Solanki, seamer VRV Singh and Anoop Pai are included in the team.
Shakti Gauchan named skipper
Shakti Gauchan has been appointed as the captain of the Nepali U-19 team that will play three one-day matches against India U-19, during the first ever visit by an official team of the test playing nation. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) included four new faces in the team, which otherwise has the players of the team that participated in Youth World Cup in New Zealand last year. Four new players are Sarad Veshwakar, Munik Shrestha, Irfan Siddique and Dipesh Khatri. All of them had already represented Nepal in various age-group.
Will Roy Dias continue?
The future of Sri Lankan cricket coach Roy Luke Dias, the most successful foreign coach for Nepal, looks uncertain after his one-and-half-year contract with Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) ended yesterday. Dias has publicly expressed his desire to stay in Nepal, but has lamented CAN officials for not initiating contract extension process in advance. “If they wanted my contract extension they should have started the procedure in advance,” Dias told an English daily.

Records rain as Nepal humilates Bhutan
Records, records and records! Its what Nepal saw breaking when it played the newest cricket nation Bhutan in Emerging Nations’ Cup in Tribhuvan University ground on Saturday.
Mehboob’s record haul humble Maldives
A record breaking eight-wicket haul by Mehaboob Alam guided Nepal to a comfortable 116-run win over Maldives in the Emerging Nation’s Cricket tournament played at the Tribhuvan University cricket ground on Friday. The Biratnagar allrounder broke the bowling record set by his teammate Dipendra Chaudhary, who picked up 6-46 in the second ACC Trophy 1998 against United Arab Emirates. Alam took eight wickets in his full quota of 10 overs conceding 23 runs.
Maldives thrash Bhutan in opener
Maldives recorded an emphatic win against Bhutan in the Emerging Nations Cup triangular tournament that started Thursday at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground. Bhutan managed mere 62 runs in its first-ever-international cricket match and batted for 28.5 overs after being asked to. Maldives surpassed the score in 11.2 overs losing only one wicket of Abdulla Shafeell.
Nepali team for Emerging Nations’ Cup announced
Cricket Association of Nepal has announced the 18-member Nepali squad for the Emerging Nations’ Cup triangular cricket tournment in Kathmandu. The triangular, featuring Nepal along with the Maldives and Bhutan, will be held during March 6 to 10. This will be the first ever international tournament for Bhutan.

Kiran Agrawal retires!
One of the most promising opening batsman of Nepal, Kiran Agrawal, has announced his retirement from cricket on Friday. “The future of Nepali cricket is bright, but I am retiring from it as I have to give more time to my business,” Kiran said. Kiran is running a motorcycle showroom in his hometown Dharan. He last played in ICC Trophy 2001 in Canada representing Nepal.

Biratnagar tops table with huge win
Region No5 Nepalgunj suffer another heavy defeat against mightly Region No 1 Biratnagar in the last of the league match of ongoing second Birendra Memorial National League Cricket Championship. Biratnagar received a huge boost for the final, on February 23, against Region No 3 Kathmandu following their emphatic 193-run win.

Biratnagar, Kathmandu final set, Bhairahawa unlucky again
Region No 1 Biratnagar will try to defend its title against Region No 3 Kathmandu on February 23 as both the matches on the fifth day of ongoing second Birendra Memorial National League Cricket Championship were cancelled due to the wet grounds. Region No 4 Bhairahawa, who lost trophy to Biratnagar on net run rate as rain cancelled the final last year, will return back. Bhairahawa shared points in two matches among total of four matches. It won only one.

Defending champion sideline mighty Bhairahawa
Defending champion Region No 1 Biratnagar sidelined last year’s finalist Region No 4 Bhairahawa in what was dubbed as the last years’ final. The final between these two teams could not take place last year due to rain, but Biratnagar today justified that the run-rate decision was alright then. Yashwant Subedi and man of the match Lakpa Lama were the heroes for Biratnagar in each innings. Yashwant played sensible cricket to make 75 out of 144 balls he faced with two hits over the ropes and 11 fours in St. Xaviers School ground. On the other innings, Lakpa took four wickets off his 10 overs giving away just 14 runs.

Birgunj, Nepalgunj suffer consecutive defeat
Region No 3 Kathmandu continued their form as Region No 2 Birgunj and Region No 5 Nepalgunj faced second consecutive defeat in the second day of ongoing second Birendra Memorial National League Championship in Kathmandu. It was one-sided affair for Kathmandu after it elected to bat at Tribhuvan University ground against weak Nepalgunj, which suffered a humiliating 199-run defeat on the first day. Kathmandu made 273 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to the highest ever score of 80 in the championship from Sandeep Shrestha. Nepalgunj in reply could only manage 123 runs in 39.3 overs.

Nepalgunj humiliated, Kathmandu revenge Birgunj
Region No 3 Kathmandu and Region No 4 Bhairahawa registered wins on the first day of the Birendra Memorial National League Cricket Tournament here on Sunday. In the match held at TU ground, Kathmandu beat Birgunj by 36 runs, while Bhairahawa defeated Region No 5 Nepalgunj by 199 runs. The victory was biggest margin in the championsfip.

Nepal to host Bhutan, Maldives for triangular
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) will host the triangular series comprising of Bhutan, the Maldives and Nepal in early March this year. The tournament is a part of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Development Programme, said Tarak Mani Dixit, the spokesperson of CAN here today. Similar tournaments involving Associate and Affiliate members of International Cricket Council (ICC) will also be organised in Kuwait and Hong Kong.
