CAN apathy mars players’ performance: Khadka

National cricket team skipper Paras Khadka has said indifference of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has affected the players’ performance. Khadka made such comment during a seminar organized by Shepherd College in the capital on Sunday.

“Apart from playing cricket, players should also take the responsibility to make the cricket management accountable,” said Khadka, “CAN is not dynamic. Until and unless CAN hires paid staff it cannot run smoothly.”

Khadka opined that CAN is running in an unprofessional manner. “A handful of people are taking advantage as volunteers in the name of social service. Players do not even get prizes easily after winning big tournaments,” said Khadka who opined that CAN officials should look for sponsors to promote cricket.

CAN member Kiran Rana said that despite a jumbo executive committee of 32 members, there were only a few capable officials in CAN. He also informed that they were involved in negotiations with corporate houses to sponsor the National Cricket Academy. “We are planning to form corporate teams and revive Nepal Police Club as well. We are also holding talks with Nepal Army for the formation of a cricket team,” said Rana.

National cricket team coach Pubudu Dassanayake said Nepal needs to learn from associate nations. “Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh got the Test nation status after winning ICC tournaments,” said the former Sri Lankan international, adding, “Sri Lankan cricket was also a victim of politics and got warnings from ICC several times. But it was able to produce talented players by giving continuity to school level cricket.”

“Kenya had reached the semifinals of 2003 World Cup and the national team is also good. But, the domestic structure is weak and so is the school cricket. Currently, Nepali cricket is in a similar condition,” Dassanayake said, “Nepal could also get One-day status within the next 12 months. But all other sides should be equally efficient.”

Meanwhile, Umpire Association´s General Secretary Binay Jha said CAN was preparing to hold a two-day match between the semifinalists of the one-day national cricket tournament and three-day match between the finalists.

The Hope Called Cricket

Nepali dreams of seeing their women play against top flight cricket nations has been quashed. The opportunity for this team being a participant at the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2014 – scheduled to be held in Bangladesh – has now been thrown out of the window. Because it did not finish as the top team in ACC Women´s Championship in Thailand, Nepali women’s team would not be travelling to Ireland this year, to play in the world cup qualifiers.

It’s disappointing for cricket fans. It is difficult to take heart from a match where your team scores all of 38 runs, in 25-over-a-side match, despite being one of the title contenders. It’s not easy to digest that the highest scorer from your team manages 7 runs off 19 balls (Sita Magar) and highest score is contributed by Ms. Extra.

But, cricket is a game of irony as much as it is about skills, techniques and scores. Just when Nepali girls were being thrashed by the home team, Thailand – earlier in the week – to collapse to a lowest ever total, there was new development back home, from where you could take a lot of heart from.

It was the same day, when National Cricket Academy began a program to find young cricket talents. Yes, we are talking about the U-12 Youth Program started by the NCA; just couple of weeks after it was formally inaugurated. And if you were in the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground (the location of NCA) – or watched it in television – you’d have been glad to see the scene.

It was an amazing scene: scores of tender, pre-teen, anticipating cherubic faces at the ground that seems to be getting older by the day (considering the ground and pitch condition). It was as if the ground itself got younger by a few years due to the excitement that was abuzz in and around it.

Dozens of children (332 to be precise), from 16 schools of the valley (many still in their school uniforms), from 4 to 5 feet in height, trying to run around, trying to take catches, and intently listening to whatever their coaches at the time were explaining (also crowding around the person whoever was giving soundbites to television cameras), was a sight I’ve not seen at a sports arena in the country for a long time. It was a scene that would make you feel good, as long as you want cricket to flourish in this part of the world.

The presence of cricketers like Binod Das, Shakti Gauchan, Basanta Regmi, Gyanendra Malla, Sanjam Regmi, Raju Basnet, Dipendra Chaudhary and Paresh Lohani at the camp was a good sign, showing that they were not content just to revel in their own success, but were ready to transfer their knowledge to the aspirants. To those who’ve only known them remotely, and for whom they’re the stars.

This is a start that also the former cricketers would be keenly watching, and perhaps be proud of. In their time, they hardly had opportunity to transfer their skills and knowledge to the rookies – something that did not let Nepali cricketers (especially the younger lot) learn the cricket tradition and history that we have. Meet the past cricketers to learn of their experience and you’d know how much they’d have liked to tell present cricketers of their glory days, which would have eventually built a strong cricket culture. A strong culture and tradition never harms development, be it in any field.

Nepal head coach Pubudu Dassanayake should be hailed for making the plan of NCA, and Cricket Association of Nepal should be praised for taking his idea seriously. However, it is just a start. It should be reminded here that the training camps such as this can only go so far. It cannot give the results we want in absence of a school cricket structure. We have had it in past, and only through that structure can we get we reap the benefit out of camps like these.

Often it is said that ‘Children are our future’. Yours truly would like to differ here. Children are our present. It is the present when we make investment, so that it gives us return in future. The time is now, the present, where we decide what we want to be, in future. And for present, there is hope.

Chaudhary guides Bhairahawa to victory

Bibek Chaudhary’s five-wicket haul ensured Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) a 47-run victory over Region No 2 (Birgunj) on Friday in the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament being held in Pokhara.

Bhairahawa elected to bat but was all out for 110 runs in 31.2 overs. However, Chaudhary’s magical bowling helped Bhairahawa to bundle out Birgunj for meager 63 runs in 30.3 overs.

Bhairahawa lost its opener very early and was languishing at 17/3 in 6.4 overs. However, Bijay Sunar and Ganesh Gaudel put up an 83-run stand for the fourth wicket. Sunar scored 37 runs off 92 balls including five boundaries before Aarif Shekh claimed his wicket in the first ball of the 27th over. Bhairahawa, then, collapsed adding only 10 runs for remaining six wickets. Birgunj bowled 22 extras.

Shekh, Irshad Ahamed and Abinash Karna claimed three wickets each. Shekh’s bowling figure of 4-1-3-3 was the peak among them.

Despite good bowling show, Birgunj faltered terribly in batting. Shekh (10 runs off 20 balls) and No 10 Sagar Gupta (10 runs off 44 balls) were the highest scorers. Birgunj defeat would have been more pathetic, had not Bhairahawa bowled 12 extras.

Player-of-the-match Bibek Chaudhary claimed five wickets. His bowling figure was 10-2-19-5. Susan Bhari dismissed two Birgunj batsmen while Devendra Somare, Man Bahadur Thapa and Eklakh Ahmed took a wicket each to seal the 47-run victory for Bhairahawa.

Bhairahawa will take on Region No 7 (Janakpur) on Saturday.

NCA launches U-12 Youth Program

(Courtesy: Republica and myrepublica.com)

Two week after establishment, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) headed by national cricket coach Pubudu Dassanayake conducted U-12 Youth Program, a training program aimed at finding talented young cricketers, at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Wednesday.

Altogether 332 students from 16 schools of Kathmandu Valley and Kathmandu Cricket Training Center (KCTC) attended introductory sessions on the first day of the program. National team stars like Binod Das, Shakti Gauchan, Basanta Regmi, Gyanendra Malla and Sanjam Regmi as well as former stars like Raju Basnet, Dipendra Chaudhary and Paresh Lohani were there to teach cricketing lessons to the rookies.

“We had been talking about conducting programs at the grassroots level in the past and I think this program has materialized the idea,” said Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) General Secretary Ashok Nath Pyakuryal, who was overwhelmed to see the huge participation on the very first day. “CAN will leave no stone unturned to make this program successful,” he added.

NCA was established on January 15 to provide continuous training facilities to the Nepali national squad, Nepal A, Nepali U-19 team and women´s national team.

“The basic idea of the Youth Program is to pick as many players as possible and train them,” said coach Dassanayake.

According to Dassanayake, former national team captain Binod Das will lead the coaching program for the U-12 boys and girls. “Until the month of May, we´ll run introductory sessions every Saturday and then we´ll pick the best 25 young cricketers,” stated Dassanayake.

“The selected 25 will go through high performance training for three months starting October,” he added. He said that the high performance training would be more organized and intensive.

Dassanayake said that he has asked national players, who are undergoing closed camp training for the upcoming ACC T20 Elite Cup, to spend a day in a week with the kids to boost their morale.

According to CAN General Secretary Pyakuryal, the training program is open to all. “Any interested school can bring their children and register them for the program since we are open to registering more children in the coming few weeks,” said Pyakuryal.

NCA gets support

Meanwhile, Model Global Visas Consultancy donated Rs 100,000 to NCA on Wednesday. Managing Director of the consultancy, Manoj Pandey, handed over a check worth the amount to CAN General Secretary Pyakuryal at the NCA office on Wednesday.

“We always welcome such generous support from cricket loving people and institutions,” said Pyakuryal and thanked Pandey for his support.

CAN has assigned its secretary Thakur Pahari and members Kiran Rana and Purna Lama to support the NCA program.

“We are looking for sponsors to support NCA and in the meantime CAN will be supporting NCA,” said Pyakuryal.

Nepal collapses to lowest ever total

Nepal’s dream of playing in the final of ACC Women’s Championship came to an end on Wednesday as the Nepali team collapsed to its lowest ever total in the semifinal against Thailand at the Prem Oval in Thailand.

Thailand pulled off an emphatic seven-wicket victory after skittling Nepal out for a paltry 38 runs. Chanida Sutthiruang’s magical bowling exposed the weaknesses of Nepali batswomen as she claimed five wickets. Player-of-the-match Sutthiruang bowled five overs including three maiden overs and gave away only two runs. Two Nepali batswomen were run out while Nattakan Chantham, Nattaya Boochatham and Rattana Sangsoma took a wicket each to bundle out Nepal.

Sita Magar (7 runs off 19 balls) and Karuna Bhandari (4 runs off 12 balls) were the highest scorers for Nepal. None of the Nepali batswomen was able to anchor the innings. The eight-run partnership between Nary Thapa (1 run) and Sita Magar for the fourth wicket was the highest of the innings.

Nepal’s total of 38 runs included 11 extras.

It was the Nepali women’s team’s lowest ever total. Nepal’s earlier lowest total was 45 runs against Bangladesh during the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2012.

Nepal was restricted to 26/8 in the final of ACC Women’s Tournament 2007 against Bangladesh but it is not counted as the lowest total as Nepal was not all out and the 30-over match was reduced to 18 overs due to rain.

Thailand easily chased the target in 12 overs losing three wickets. Pundarika Prathanmitr scored unbeaten 18 runs off 46 balls. Nepali captain Rubina Chhetri claimed two wickets and Sita Magar was involved in a runout but Sirintra Saengsakaorat (unbeaten five runs) supported Prathanmitr to seal a seven-wicket victory for Thailand.

The defeat has also ended Nepal’s dream of playing in the Women’s World T20. Only the winner of the ongoing tournament will qualify for the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifiers.

China thrashed Hong Kong by 86 runs in the other semifinal held on Wednesday. China put up 158/2 in 25 overs as Zhang Mei scored an unbeaten 85 runs. China then bowled out Hong Kong for 72 runs in 24.1 overs.

Thailand will take on China in the final on Thursday while Nepal will lock horns with Hong Kong in the third place play-off.
