Blind cricket chair elected Asian Dev Director

Pawan Ghimire, the chairman of Cricket Association of the Blind (CAB) Nepal, has been unanimously re-elected as the Asian Development Director of the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC).

According to CAB general secretary Sugam Bhattarai, Ghimire was elected during the WBCC Annual General Meeting and Convention in Banglore, India.

Ghimire was proposed by Pakistan and seconded by South Africa during the meeting for a two-year term.

“Ghimire will work for another two years under Sayed Sultan Shah, the newly elected WBCC chairman,” CAB release added.

Nepal was also chosen as the hosts of next WBCC Annual General Meeting in 2014.

Banglore is hosting the first ever World T20 Cup for Blind Cricket in which Nepal is also participating alongside eight other countries. The event begins on December 2 and ends on 13.

Besides Nepal, hosts India, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka is participating in the tournament, which is a joint effort by Bangalore-based NGO, Samarthanam and Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI).

As many as six partially impaired players and five totally blind players from each country would play the games, the CABI General Secretary, G K Mahantesh told reporters here.

Interestingly, Nepal, for the first time in the history of blind cricket, would field two women players in World Cup matches.

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga will be present at the inaugural ceremony of the World Cup to be held at Kanteerava Stadium on December 1, Prasad said.

Nepal’s team include visually impaired sprinter/cricketer Bikram Bahadur Rana, who recently broke the national record in 100 m during the London Paralympics. He, like Ghimire himself, is an armyman who turned to blind cricket after losing his eyesight during the Maoist insurgency.

CAN launches fast bowling camp

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) started the first-ever fast bowling camp at the Tribhuvan University Ground, Kirtipur on Friday with the aim of producing fast bowlers for the future. The camp will conclude on Monday.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Development officer and former Sri Lankan fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake is taking charge of the camp as ACC development officer. Coaches Samson Jung Thapa, Manjur Alam Khan and national team captain Paras Khadka and former captain Binod Das will assist Ratnayake in the camp.

Altogether 17 fast bowlers, including national team members Chandra Saud and Krishna Karki, national women’s team captain Rubina Chhetri to U-16 bowlers Jagdish Chand and Kali Charan Yadav, are participating in the camp. Others included in the camp are Avinash Karna, Saurav Khanal, Ram Naresh Giri, Gopal Singh, Prajesh Bahadur Singh, Jitendra Mukhiya, Sanjog Karna, Jatta Shankar Sarraf, Amar Singh Routela, Ajay Shahani, Arjun Chapagain and Yagyaman Kumal.

“We feel proud to host the fast bowling camp for the first time among the associate nations of the ACC. We are looking for future fast bowlers. That is why we have included U-16 and U-19 players in the camp,” said Ashoknath Pyakuryal, general secretary of CAN. “We are planning to host special camps for batting, fielding and spin bowling in future,” he added.

Speaking at the inaugural function, ACC development officer Ratnayake claimed that it was the first ever fast bowling camp among the associate nations of ACC.

Ratnayake said that he would teach Nepali fast bowlers to keep natural instincts rather than looking for super speed. “We can not be Bret Lee or Michael Holding. Lee, Holding, Rumesh and Paras are different. Their bone structures and muscular strengths are different. So, I want to keep natural instincts and to be fit and intelligent,” said Ratnayake.

Ratnayake recalled his days as the fast bowling coach of Sri Lankan Cricket Board in 1998.

“I was a part of Sri Lankan board as a fast bowling coach. I was only level II coach then and I did not know much about what should be done. I applied very simple structure. I just ask people to go to every corner of Sri Lanka and tap even a person bowling in the street. Fast bowler like Dilhara Fernando was part of it. I had divided them in two strings. The boys in the string ‘A’ used go for national side. I’ll try to apply similar structure here,” said Ratnayake.

He asked Nepal not to expect a miracle but wait for another 10 years.

Captain Cool

If you followed Nepal’s march in ACC Trophy Elite, you could not have remained unaffected with one man’s performance. That of Nepal captain Paras Khadka, who not only took the responsibility of scoring most runs in the tournament, but also took wickets during important phases in many matches with his military medium (pace) bowling.

With his performance, he has made his coach say that ‘Paras is the best captain among associate cricket nations’. If you followed the twitteratti of facebook dwellers,  you would like his new nickname ‘Captain Cool’. To me, the story began long, long ago.

A decade ago, during one of the club matches at capital’s Tundikhel one youngster – probably in his mid-teens – caught yours truly’s attention. Not because he batted or bowled like a child prodigy. But in the manner with which he took a catch.

The fielder, the youngster, caught a skier off then Nepal captain Raju Khadka – a name that drew awe in Nepali domestic cricket circuit – with an ease that was hardly seen in many seasoned players during those days. The youngster, I was later to learn, was Paras Khadka.

Those were the days, when you would not see many journalists on the cricket ground, especially Tundikhel – yes, that’s as good as Shivaji Park of Nepal – so you can bet not many watched that match. It was the manner, the ease, the poise, with a bit of élan, that this boy showed – for that brief moment – would have made you feel that he was meant to be special. Coolness personified…

Little did we know then, that it was an indication that the younger Khadka was eventually to replace the older Khadka in the scene. It was only apt that Paras played his first match for Nepal, during Raju Khadka’s captaincy in ICC Intercontinental Cup versus Malaysia in 2005. He took two catches, a wicket and scored 40 odd runs, coming in when the score was 38 for 5 and announcing his arrival.

In the seven years that has gone by, Paras Khakda has become leader of the pack called Team Nepal. To judge a sports leader we need to compare them on a few criteria. Integrity, dedication, openness, creativity, fairness and assertiveness being some of those. His integrity and dedication has never been in question, since he decided to play for Nepal – despite saying it was all over for him after U-19 team. He scores well in other departments too, especially in creativity and assertiveness. His out of the box thinking has startled opposition team many a times, as he has used as many as four bowlers in the first four overs of the match. He has rarely let the opposition dominate with his assertive batting, scoring at more than run-a-ball on most occasions. Not many in Nepali team play pull shot with as much authority. Additionally, his presence – the coolness factor, as many would like to call it – in the pack, makes him a special one. Hardly ever would you see him wavering, even as the situation is dire.

During U-19 World Cup Plate semi-final, when Nepal was playing South Africa, the Proteas needed 10 runs off the last over with 5 wickets in hand, when Kanishka Chaugain (captain of the side) threw ball to Paras Khadka. Khakda conceded 7, and Nepal won. You may not call him strike bowler of the side, but his calmness got Nepal home.

Many a times he has been brash, going to the extent of criticizing the boss of Cricket Association and its officials. To be fair to him, he did that during the leadership of Binay Raj Pandey (the President who was ousted last year) and he does that now, when the entire regime has changed. As he says, “I’ll continue to be aggressive. As long as I perform, I will be in the team. If I don’t, I would be out.”

If you’ve seen him closely, you’d hope he continues performing.

One APF doesn’t make the summer

It is difficult to say if Roshani Bohara is a happy lady or not. Roshani is a cricketer from Baitadi. She must be happy for being named the player-of-the-series during the Women’s National T20 championship. The title came about as she scored 99 runs and claimed six wickets during the tournament. Along with the title, Roshani got richer by Rs 10,000.

She could be a touch sad with the cash award though. Last time the same award for a player in Men’s National T20 championship carried a purse of Rs. 15 thousand. In fact, Roshani’s purse would be considered good, if you take into account the amount title winning team got: all of Rs. 25,000. Compare that to the title winning team in men’s: Rs. 125,000.

That shows the discrepancy in the way men and women are treated in sports. It’s not that such things happen only in Nepal. Women’s World T20 was being played during the Men’s World T20 Cricket. Not many people took notice, for it was not mentioned much in media.

The amount of media coverage for Women’s National T20 championship has been comparable. Mainstream media carried it, but reluctance was visible, for it received lesser column centimeters.

This column is not an attempt to do what Tennis player Billie Jean King did, asking for prize money at par with male tennis players. A few other women Tennis players like Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati and Steffi Graf, over the years, also joined the outcry. In fact, in 1972, after winning the US Open Jean King threatened to boycott the Grand Slam the following year if she was not paid equally.

The question here is not about pay. But what needs to be done, or rather what is not being done. It’s a common knowledge that Nepal has bagged ACC U-19 Women’s championship three times in a row. In fact, Nepali women have made sure no other team takes the title in any of the abovementioned championship held so far.

At the senior level, Nepali women were runners-up in ACC Women’s tournament in 2007 (25-over-a-side). Following that, we’ve not been able to go beyond semi-finals in the biennial event (as it was converted to ACC Women’s T20 championship).

This shows that Nepali women’s cricket does have potential. The good show at age-group and lack of similar achievement shows that something has not been done right. It’s just about focusing on what to do. As of now, Armed Police Force is the only organization that employs women cricketers, giving opportunity to 11 players who’ve represented Nepali team at international level. That explains why APF got the title, but it also raises a question as how long can we rely on only one organization, to develop women’s cricket.

Right after the Dashain festival, Nepali women will be playing ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup – owing to semi-final finish at ACC Women’s T20 championship last year – where teams from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will also play. Now to perform at that level, you need a team that has some confidence. Confidence is also a result of motivation that players receive. Awards definitely are one of the motivating factors. Other is institutionalization of cricket, and the cricketers. It would be only fair to say that precious little has been done so far.

We might remember that Nepal women’s cricket (Nepalgunj) was given Global award for Best Women’s Cricket Initiative by ICC in 2006. Of course, it was recognition of what Cricket Association had done so far. The award should have worked as a shot in the arm and development should have continued. It’s never late to start though.

CAN has already impressed yours truly by organizing National T20 Championship in Pokhara, first time any national cricket tournament was held in mofussil in past 9 years. It’s good, if development continues.

When the men cricketers were given salary by CAN earlier this year – after announcing stipend for national cricketers – former captain of Nepali women’s team, Neera Rajopadhyay posted on her facebook page: “What do you understand by national cricketers?”

Hopefully, next such development will not miss women cricketers.

Mismanagement mars cricketers’ victory parade

A victory parade was taken out in the capital on Monday to celebrate the Nepali national cricket team’s second major international title in a month. However, it was nothing like one.

The Nepali team on Friday had jointly lifted the title of ACC Trophy Elite along with host UAE. The team had also secured its berth in the World Cricket League Division 3 a few weeks ago after emerging champion in Division 4.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), which had earlier declared to provide Rs 30,000 each to all members of the squad, had organized the victory parade that began from Hotel Crown Plaza, Naxal.

However, CAN officials including its president Tanka Angbuhang, general secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel and the vice-presidents didn’t attend the event. Only a handful of CAN officials took part in the victory parade. Angbuhang was also absent at the Tribhuvan International Airport when the team returned home after winning Division 4.

The victory parade, accompanied by traditional Nepali music instruments, had started from Naxal and ended at the National Sports Council (NSC) premises, Tripureshwar via Jai Nepal cinema hall, Ratna Park, Bag Bazaar, Putali Sadak, Bhrikuti Mandap, Bhadrakali and Shahid Gate. The players were carried on a truck.

The pedestrians waved to the cricketers to applaud the achievements of the triumphant team. About 100 cricket fans accompanied the team throughout the victory parade chanting, “Long live Nepali cricket team, Nepali cricket is our pride”.

But the atmosphere at NSC, the apex sports body, was just the opposite.

Neither was there microphone nor any banner. There were hardly enough chairs for the players. The fans present there were furious when the emcee made a mistake of addressing the team as the winner of  “ACC Elite Trophy held in Malaysia, Dubai”.

In the absence of Yuvaraj Lama, the member secretary of NSC, treasurer Indra Thing was scheduled to address the team. But the irked fans shouted slogans against CAN and NSC forcing the NSC staffers to get a microphone. They shouted: “Tanka Angbuhang resign from your post, don’t humiliate cricketers, we don’t need incapable CAN”.

“A CAN official telephoned me 15 minutes before the team arrived at NSC and told me to felicitate the team,” said Thing, “NSC had received the letter about the event yesterday but I was unaware of it. This event was organized in a hurry, so it was mismanaged and I apologize for it. Please do not take this as humiliation of cricketers,” said Thing who promised to honor the team before Dashain.

Speaking at the function, Nepali team skipper Paras Khadka said that the team was delighted with the rally but the closing ceremony was mismanaged. “The closing ceremony was not good which made the whole event charm-less,” said Khadka adding, “Our responsibility is to play cricket rather than make the environment for the game.”

“Everyone should understand that this is an important period for Nepali cricket and everyone should understand their responsibilities,” Khadka said.

Former national team player Dipendra Chaudhary expressed serious dissatisfaction over the reception at NSC. “A month ago, the government felicitated the members of the squad with Rs 300,000 each but the same team who achieved the greatest ever victory for Nepal has been ignored. They treated us as if the team had won a local club-level tournament.”

With two titles, Nepali cricketers finally come of age

Nepali cricket fans are on cloud nine as their national squad claimed two prestigious titles within a month time and that too away from home.

Nepal had clinched only four titles in the last 16 years, after entering the international cricketing arena in 1996 through the ACC Trophy Elite. Contrary to the past, Nepal clinched ICC World Cricket League Division 4 and ACC Trophy Elite within a month.

So what is the reason for such difference in the Nepal team which has suddenly begun to believe in themselves and increasingly played with more confidence?

Captain Paras Khadka thinks his side has matured a lot in the recent times. “Every member in the team knows his responsibility and the role he has to play,” said Khadka.

Khadka´s claims seem to be absolutely right if we look back at the recent performances.

Basant Regmi took 22 wickets in the Division 4 held in Malaysia and was adjudged man-of-the-series. Shakti Gauchan became the most successful bowler of the ACC Trophy Elite that concluded in the UAE on Friday as he claimed 15 wickets in six matches with 3.18 economy rate.

Spinners have always been the strength of Nepali side in the past and they maintained the domination even in the last two tournaments.

However, Nepali batsmen pleased Nepali fans more this time. “Chasing targets above 150-run used to be a tough task for our team in the past but we have seen huge progress in batting in recent days,” said Santosh Mardan Thapa, former member of Cricket Association Nepal (CAN).

Nepali batsmen had scored only three centuries in the last 16 years after the international debut but Nepali cricket fans witnessed three centuries in the last two tournaments.

Opener Subash Khakurel scored 115 runs against the USA and his opening partner Anil Mandal struck 113 runs against Denmark in Division 4. Skipper Khadka scored unbeaten 106 runs against Kuwait in the ACC Trophy Elite.

Khadka was adjudged man-of-the-series as he scored 291 runs and took nine wickets in the ACC Trophy. His batting average was 72.75 in the ACC Trophy.

Likewise, Vice Captain Gyanendra Malla scored 212 runs while openers Mandal and Khakurel scored 200 and 139 runs respectively from the six matches of the ACC Trophy.

Not only the top order, lower order batsmen like Sharad Vesawkar, Pradeep Airee, Prithu Banskota and Shakti Gauchan chipped in to rescue team in crucial moments.

“Our batsmen showed their guts to chase any total and it is a huge improvement I have noticed in our team,” said Uttam Karmacharya, who was the captain when Nepal participated in the ACC Trophy for the first time in 1996.

Not only Nepali cricket fans but also the opponent coaches applauded Nepali players during the ACC Trophy. “They were one of the best team in the tournament. “I am surprised to see the guts shown by Nepal. They fought on to tie the match. They are much fitter team since they are professionals and full time cricketers,” UAE coach Aaqib Javed, former Pakistani cricketer, told a local UAE newspaper.

Skipper Khadka credited extra labor of players and Coach Pubudu Dassanayake behind the success.

“Nobody is taking his place in the national squad for granted and everybody is putting in extra effort to retain his place,” said Khadka.

“Meanwhile, the coach has brought in positive attitude in all players. We used to practice for some hours during the closed camp training but we are practicing for 4 to 5 hours daily and round the year,” he added.

To achieve the successes, Dassanayake kept national players busy in cricket calendar and played pivotal role to arrange exposures to some of the cricketers in the foreign tournaments.

He arranged training session for Shakti Gauchan with Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals, sent skipper Paras Khadka to Canada to play professional tournament and arranged places for fast bowler Chandra Saud and Amrit Bhattarai in U-23 tournament of Sri Lanka. He arranged special training for Anil Mandal, Sharad Vesawkar and Gyanendra Malla in India. On the other hand, he engaged national players in training sessions regularly.

“I wanted to change the cricket culture of players on and off the field. Senior players must be role models for the upcoming players and for me, one can be a role model only with his hard work and proper training,” said Dassanayake.

Skipper Khadka thinks that his boys were always full of skill but the busy schedule helped them convert the skill into performance.

“We are able to adapt to whatever coach told us during the match these days,” said Khadka.

“Probably, coaching style of the new coach (Pubudu Dassanayake) suited Nepali national team as Roy sir´s (former coach Roy Luke Dias) style used to suit the age-group teams in the past,” said former Captain Binod Das.

“Probably, the growing age of players is also contributing to bring in maturity. We are more experienced now,” added Sharad Vesawkar, the middle-order batsman.

Das thinks that the current form of Nepali national squad is at a peak and the team should continue with it for a longer period. However, Khadka disagrees with Das. “I still don´t feel it´s our peak form yet. We have scope for improvement in many areas. I think we could be better,” said Khadka.

Then, is there nothing to worry in future? Skipper Khadka thinks smaller players´ pool could be Nepal´s headache in future. “We have very small players pool. We sometimes do not get proper replacement for injured players,” said Khadka. “The CAN should think about developing players´ pool and also the ´A´ team,” Khadka concluded.

Nepali captain Khadka credited the title victory to his teammates. “Our hard work paid us back and we are happy,” said Khadka. “The World Cricket League Division 4 victory has its own meaning but for us this trophy has more value as we put up entirely high level performance in this tournament,” he added.

Nepal hopes for maiden ACC Trophy Elite title

Nepal is taking on host UAE in the final of the ACC Trophy Elite on Friday at the Sharjah Cricket Ground as it chases an illusive trophy for the third time.

It is the third ACC Trophy Elite final for Nepal and second in a row. However, Nepal is yet to win the title.

Nepal secured the final berth defeating Malaysia by 21 runs in the semifinal on Wednesday while the UAE thrashed Afghanistan by eight wickets.

“We had a good rest today (Thursday), had a pool session to relax and held a team meeting in the evening. We are looking for a good game tomorrow (Friday),” said Nepali team coach Pubudu Dassanayake.

However, Nepali team is concerned over the fitness of two fast bowlers in the team. As Amrit Bhattarai is suffering from chest pain and Binod Das is suffering from knee injury, coach Dassanayake has to pick either spinner Sanjam Regmi or batsman Binod Bhandari for the final match.

“Right now both the fast bowlers are not available for the final but we are trying to see them in the morning. There is only 20 percent hope of their availability,” said Dassanayake on Thursday evening. “We’ll inspect the wicket on Friday morning and finalize the players. If we find a spinning wicket, we’ll pick Sanjam (Regmi) otherwise we’ll go for an extra batsman,” he added.

Nepal had lost to Afghanistan by 95 runs in the final of last edition of the ACC Trophy held in Kuwait in 2010, when the UAE had crashed out of the tournament from group stage. Nepal is expecting to go one-step better this time and the UAE is expecting to bring back the lost glory.

Nepali team is putting its faith on its batsmen and the spinner for the final as they are doing well in the tournament. Nepali captain Paras Khadka is the leading scorer of the tournament so far. Khadka has scored 260 runs in five matches with an average of 86.66 and strike rate of 109.70.

Vice captain Gyanendra Malla is on the fifth position of leading scorer with 180 runs from five matches.

Meanwhile, spinner Shakti Gauchan is the fourth highest wicket taker of the tournament as he had claimed 12 wickets in the tournament. Another spinner Basant Regmi has also claimed 10 wickets in the tournament.

Nepali national team had broken the jinx against the UAE in the opening match of the ongoing tournament and defeated the host by four wickets last week.

Earlier, Nepal had encountered the UAE six times in the One-Day format and lost all of them. The UAE is higher ranked team than Nepal in ICC World Cricket League (WCL). The UAE is currently enjoying WCL Division 2 status and is among the top eight associate nation teams that can play in the World Cricket League Championship, from which top two teams qualify for the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

“We really want to prove that we are a better side than Afghanistan and the UAE. The UAE have good players and they are used to the playing condition. We have defeated UAE in the first match of the tournament. However, tomorrow’s (Friday’s) match would be a different game altogether. It would be a good test for our team as well,” said Dassanayke.

Media for cricket development

BY SANJIB PAUDEL

Wow! Our national cricket team is really doing well and making all of Nepali proud, united and happy. It is also making our country famous worldwide. Champions of ICC Division 4 and now in the final ACC Elite Trophy, back-to-back good performances have given all Nepali cricket fans hopes for the qualification to the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh and 2015 World Cup in Australia.

If our team becomes successful to qualify for any World Cup, either 50-over or 20-over, it will be the first time for any Nepali sport team representing Nepal in any World Cup. It will be the greatest achievement and matter of pride for all of us.

But I wonder if our media is giving as much attention and emphasis to cricket and cricketers for their achievements. Although our cricket team has achieved a lot of success in a few years, they are not able to catch the attention of national news channel and newspaper. Why is it so?

I still remember when Irfan Pathan took his first hattrick against Pakistan a few years ago, Indian news channel immediately broadcasted live conversion with his family. Why can’t our media do the same? Why can’t they run some programmers and TV shows related to cricket and give emphasis to cricket?

Now, it’s time of our media to do something for developing the cricket and creating the cricketing environment all around the country. We have dozens of Nepali news channel and newspaper giving just the news of politics most of the time.

Catching people attention toward cricket is possible only if our media focuses on cricket and cricketers. If our media’s focus and emphasis on cricket and provides sufficient coverage including news, views, scores and space to players, Nepal will fast move towards a great future – World Cups in near future.

I just feel publishing/broadcasting cricket news, views, ideas, score, live coverage, cricket programs and features about cricketers’ life by news channel directly benefits the news channel as followers of Nepali cricket are in great number.

I kindly request the Nepali media – television channels, newspapers and radios – to give emphasis and time for cricket, which is doing really well for our glory. All cricket fans are waiting eagerly to see more emphasis given by media.

I feel very glad as in Facebook, we have many cricket related pages which are providing news, views, score update of cricket and website like Cricnepal, cricket.com.np and many more doing great job in covering cricket. Cricket is uniting all of us together. Jai Nepali Cricket.
