Spinners bowl Nepal to win over Qatar

Spinners shared eight wickets to bowl out Qatar for 96 runs in 20 overs as Nepal registered a six-wicket consolation win in the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup on Thursday.

With Thursday’s results, Afghanistan and UAE from Group A and Oman from Group B have confirmed their berth to the semifinals. Kuwait is certain to qualify.

Oman beats Nepal by 12 runs

Nepal’s batting flattered once again as Oman registered a 12-run victory in the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Dipendra Chaudhary took three wickets to restrict Oman to lowly 112/9 in 20 overs but Hemin Desai’s hat-trick wrecked Nepal’s top-order to bowl out Nepal for 100 in 19.1 overs. It was Oman’s third victory and Nepal’s second loss in three matches. Continue reading

Pepsi, Standard Chartered to sponsor senior team

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) signed a five-year deal with Pepsi and Standard Chartered Bank for the sponsorship of the senior national team and one-day as well as Twenty20 national tournaments.

According to the deal, worth Rs. 3m, Pepsi will be the sponsor of the team while Standard Chartered will be the co-sponsor. The deal has to be renewed annually. Continue reading

Malaysia topples Nepal’s low total

Owing to the worst batting performance, Nepal lost its first match of the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup to Malaysia by six wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Nepal begins Delhi warm-ups with two defeats

Nepal is warming up in New Delhi, India for the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Twenty20 Elite Cup in an invitation of Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA).

Paras Khadka named national captain

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) named Paras Khadka as the national captain for the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup. All-rounder Paras, 23, will replace Binod Das to become eighth cricketer ever to lead the national team.

CAN releases annual program, budget

[Updated with annual calendar] Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) passed the annual program and budget in an executive committee meeting on Wednesday, the association said in a press release.

CAN also added that Varun Beverage, the producer of Pepsi soft drinks in Nepal, and Standard Chartered Bank will sponsor the senior national team and event this year. Last year, Springwood brand of Surya Nepal was the main sponsor of the event. Continue reading

Nepali umpires making history at WCL Div 6

Pepsi World Cricket League Division 6 got underway in Singapore from Saturday. In the first day’s play between Norway and Botswana, which Norway won by 19 runs, Sanjay Gurung, a Nepali umpire, not only made his debut in an ICC event but also fulfilled his cherished dream.

Roy Dias – Magician with the willow

The mere mention of his name conjures up visions of a magician with the willow. He was the artist who touched your heart. The game was supreme and in that game he was the artist of artists. No figures can tell the story of his artistry. Words fail to picture him. But then the maestro was never the one to bat for records. His batsmanship was not a thought, but a feeling.

Roy Luke Dias was born on October 18, 1952, in Colombo and was educated at St. Peter’s College. He started playing cricket at the age of 10. He was in the college First XI team at the age of 14. Dias admits that he was not an outstanding batsman in his schooldays. It was only when he started playing in domestic cricket that Dias really blossomed. He first played for Colts Cricket Club and later joined the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC). Continue reading

The secretary of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Shashidutta Pandey, died on Saturday morning. Pandey, 58, was suffering from jaundice and died in the course of treatment at the Medicare Hospital, Chabahil at about 6:45 am. He was admitted to the hospital at midnight Friday. Continue reading

Sri Lanka’s first captain in Test and ODIs, Bandula Warnapura, also Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) Development Manager, is in Nepal to visit cricket facilities of the country. Warnapura, 56, is responsible for development of cricket in Asian region. In his second visit to Nepal, first one during ACC U-17 Elite Cup, he accompanied Andre Faichy, the International Cricket Council (ICC) event manager, who was here to assess the facilities for the ICC World Cricket League Division V event to be held in January 2010. ICC confident of successful WCL Div 5
