The journey to ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 continues as fifth-placed Hong Kong (11 points) face sixth-placed Nepal (8 points) on 13 and 15 October. Ahead of the final round of matches, both teams are chasing the fourth spot, which is currently occupied by Kenya with 12 points.

Nepal captain Paras Khadka, who is not taking anything for granted, said: “It is a crucial series for Nepal. As a team we have worked very hard in the last month to be fully prepared to win both games and be in the top four in the standings after round seven. We will look to play high-intensity cricket and are looking forward to facing Hong Kong.”

Hong Kong captain Babar Hayat is looking for full points in the ICC World Cricket League Championship matches.

There are still six teams vying for four qualification spots, so it is important for us to win both matches against Nepal and get maximum points. We will hope to benefit from home advantage.

Haq’s ton as Pakistan U23 beat Nepal by 6 wickets

Imam ul Haq of Pakistan scored unbeaten 105 as Pakistan U23 beat Nepal by 6 wickets in the first match of the ACC Emerging Teams Cup 2017 at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground, Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh on March 27.

22-year-old Haq, whose uncle Inzamam ul Haq was one of the greatest batsmen for Pakistan, carried the bat throughout the innings as Pakistan U23 chased Nepal’s 180/9 with 29 balls remaining.

Nepal’s bowlers struggled with bowling as the Pakistani openers, Imran Butt (20) and Haq racked up 67 runs in 17 overs. Haris Sohail (17), Mohammad Rizwan (10) and Hussail Talat (0) were other batsmen out as Haq ensured that he kept an end intact and runs flowing. Hammad Azam remained unbeaten on 22.

Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane and captain Gyanendra Malla, who rarely bowls, shared four wickets.

After Pakistan U23 invited Nepal to bat first, Nepal struggled with batting as well. Opener Gyanendra scored 2 in 24 balls before leaving ht field while valiant effort from Sunil Dhamala, who top scored with 43 runs off 126 balls, and Sharad Vesawkar, who got 38 runs off 58 balls, took Nepal to a respectable total. Binod Bhandari (24), Arif Sheikh (18) and Dipendra Singh Airee (14) chipped in a few runs but that was never going to the enough for Pakistan U23.

Player of the match Ghulam Mudassar claimed 5 wickets for 26 runs while Usama Mir took a couple.

Nepal will play hosts Bangladesh U23 on March 28.

Brief Scores: Nepal 180/9 in 50 overs (Sunil Dhamala 43, Sharad Vesawkar 38, Binod Bhandari 24, Ghulam Mudassar 5/26, Usama Mir 2/38) lost to Pakistan U23 183/4 in 45.1 overs (Imam ul Haq 105*, Hammad Azam 22*, Imrat Butt 20, Sandeep Lamichhanel 2/32, Gyanendra Malla 2/44) by 6 wickets.

Nepal outplay Kenya in WCL

Nepal displayed a brilliant all-round performance to outplay Kenya and register a 7-wicket victory in the World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) match at the TU Cricket Ground.

Kenya was bowled out for 155 in 46.1 overs; and Nepal registered a victory with 118 balls remaining chasing down the target in 30.2 overs. After two matches, the honors were even as Kenya had earlier registered a 5-wicket victory in a rain-affected match on March 11 at the same ground.

The result of the two matches didn’t affect the WCLC point table as Kenya (10 points from 10 matches) and Nepal (8 points from 10 matches) remain on 5th and 6th places. The top four teams will play the Cricket World Cup qualifiers.

Stand-in captain Gyanendra Malla and teenage sensation Dipendra Singh Airee played a brilliant partnership to take Nepal to victory. Dipendra, only playing his second senior international match, scored 62 off 66 balls with 8 fours and a six. He showed maturity, skills and attitude of playing high-level cricket ensuring the ticking of the scoreboard and hitting occasional boundaries. He was particularly harsh on short balls from spinners pulling them to boundaries.

His lone six completed Nepal’s 100 runs before he lost his wicket to Collins Obuya. Sharad Vesawkar then joined Gyanendra, who had played a patient knock reaching his half-century and having an intention of finishing the match from the center. Sharad took a few balls to get used to before began hitting hard.

Gyanendra hit his lone six as Nepal reached 150/3 in 30 overs. Sharad then took the charge hitting a four and a six to finish the match in style. His brisk innings lasted 11 balls but produced 24 runs with 4 fours and a six. Gyanendra remained unbeaten on 64 off 93 balls with 8 fours and a six.

Earlier, Kenya’s inning was a tale of two extraordinary bowling performances and a patient batting partnership.

Invited to bat first, Kenya began well hitting 10 runs off the first over bowled by Sompal Kami, but soon found themselves on the backfoot as Mehboob Alam, who returned to international cricket on Saturday’s match after more than a year, bowled exceptional. On his second over, Mehboob grabbed two wickets to reduce Kenya to 14/2 and went on to bowl five consecutive maiden overs.

Mehboob was known as crowd’s favorite at the TU Cricket Ground and he showed he is still the same bowling 6-5-2-2 before went on to give 9 runs in his 7th over. His exploits meant that Kenya was 40/2 after 16th over.

Then it was Collins Obuya and opener Irfan Karim, who played a patient partnership of 79 runs for third wicket taking Kenya to 93/2 in 27 overs. The partnership was the highlight of the Kenyan batting as they built a good foundation after early loss where others could have stood firm and delivered.

But Nepali spinners made it a dream for them. Once Obuya was stumped, thanks to some smart work by Binod Bhandari, off leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane for 48 off 78 balls, and Karim lost his cool to hit out Sharad, the Kenyan batting collapsed. Karim scored 38 off 77 balls.

Sharad, who rarely bowls, went on to bowl 7.1 overs taking 4/28 – his career-best figure (even it’s first time he had taken wicket and he had only bowled two overs before this in 20 List A matches). He was once on the hattrick bowling out Karan Kaul (14) and Shem Ngoche. Basant Regmi, who had earlier got a key wicket of captain Rakip Patel (21), got 10th man Odhiambo before Sharad bowled last man Otieno on the first ball of 47th over.

Brief scores: Kenya 155 all out in 46.1 overs (Obuya 48, Karim 38, Patel 21, Sharad 4/28, Mehboob 2/11, Basant 2/24) lost to Nepal 160 for 3 in 30.2 overs (Gyanendra 64*, Dipendra 62, Sharad 24*, Otieno 2/29) by 7 wickets.

Kenya beat Nepal as rain play spoilsport

The result of the match was simple: Kenya beat Nepal by 5 wickets in D/L method. Despite the heart-breaking loss that virtually ended Nepal’s hopes of reaching the qualifying round for the Cricket World Cup, the match was memorable for the passion of 10,000+ spectators who braved rain and wet natural sitting for hours to ensure Nepal play with their cheers.

Kenya’s bowling unit, led by Shem Ngoche’s three-wicket haul, set up win for Kenya in a rain-hit ICC World Cricket League Championship match on Saturday. Overnight and early morning rain in TU Cricket Ground the start of play before the 50-over match was reduced to a 38-overs-a-side affair. Put in to bat, Nepal didn’t get the best of starts, losing five wickets with just 66 runs on the board. It was only some late hitting from Shakti Gauchan and Sompal Kami, who added 30 runs for the ninth wicket, that lifted the side to 112 for 8 before rain arrived again in the 36th over.

Stand-in captain Gyanendra Malla (27 in 35 balls), debutant Dipendra Singh Airee (19 in 36 balls), Shakti (18 not out in 24), Somapl (15 not out in 17) and Sagar Pun (10 in 23) were the only Nepal batsmen to reach double-figures. Ngoche, the left-arm spinner, returned 3 for 18 in his six overs, and was well supported by Nelson Odhiambo, who took 2 for 17 in six overs.

Paras Khadka missed the match as he is recuperation from an abdomen surgery conducted in mid-February after being diagnosed with appendicitis.

Kenya was set a revised target of 109 in 29 overs and Sagar Pun and Basant Regmi, the Nepal spinners, dismissed Kenya’s top three by the seventh over, with Pun striking off successive deliveries to dismiss Irfan Karim and Dhiren Gondaria. But Collins Obuya (24 in 32) and Rakep Patel (34 not out in 52) kept the chase going with a crucial 44-run fourth-wicket stand.

Kenya had reached 80 for 5 in 22.3 overs before rain interrupted again, and Kenya was set 94 to win from 26 overs upon resumption. Patel, the captain, and Gurdeep Singh then took Kenya over the line to 98 for 5 in 24.1 overs.

Captain Gyanendra commented: “If it had been a 50-over game, probably the complexion of the game would have been different. We need to step up our batting in the next game.”

Kenya coach Thomas Odoyo said: “In the morning, our boys bowled in the right areas and kept taking wickets. In the evening, it was difficult to bat on but our players are professionals and dealt it with calmness.”

This was Kenya’s fifth win (10 points) in nine matches in the tournament so far. It is now placed fifth in the eight-team table, while Nepal, with three wins (6 points) from nine games, is placed a rung below. Netherlands heads the list with 16 points from ten games, while Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Scotland placed above Kenya, and Namibia and USA propping up the table.

Brief score: Nepal 112/8 in 36 overs (G Malla 27, D Airee 19; S Ngoche 3-18, N Odhiambo 2-17) lost to Kenya 98-5 in 24.1 overs (R Patel 34*, C Obuya 24; S Pun 2-8, S Lamichhane 2-21) by five wickets under D/L method

Nepal, Kenya eye crucial wins

Nepal and Kenya are hoping to put their experience during recent tours of India to best use as they look to garner maximum points in the upcoming ICC World Cricket League matches in TU Cricket Stadium, Kathmandu on 11 and 13 March.

Nepal recently played three matches in New Delhi while Kenya played four matches in the western Indian city of Vadodara in preparation for their WCL fixtures, hoping to remain in contention for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018.

The top four sides from among the eight sides will make it to the Qualifier, which will also feature the four bottom sides from the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings as on 30 September 2017 and two top sides from the WCL Division 2.

The Netherlands is presently at the top of the points table with 16 points from 10 matches while Papua New Guinea is in second position with 12 points from eight matches. Hong Kong and Scotland are both on 11 points from 10 and eight matches, respectively.

nepal-500x357-4171042

Nepal captain Paras Khadka says his team is out to get maximum points in its remaining six matches of the championship, which gives each team 14 matches to play.

“We toured New Delhi for three practice matches and have also been training at home. We understand that all matches will be very important for us now since we only have three rounds remaining and every point will be crucial in relation to the final standings. We can’t lose points if we want to make it to the top four,” Khadka said.

“Kenya is a good team with an experienced bunch of cricketers, but we have always played well as a unit and with great team spirit. Our spinners are our most important asset,” he added about his slow bowling attack, which includes 16-year-old leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, who was invited last year by former Australia captain Michael Clarke to represent his Sydney-based club Western Suburbs.

“We would definitely have liked to be higher in the points table but all is not lost and this makes the upcoming two games very essential to finish in the top-four,” says Rakep Patel, the Kenya captain. “We would definitely have liked to be higher in the points table but all is not lost and this makes the upcoming two games very essential to finish in the top-four,” says Rakep Patel, the Kenya captain.

Nepal currently has six points from eight matches which includes a 2-0 victory over Namibia and a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands. Nepal lost all its matches against PNG and Scotland while it will play Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates after the matches against Kenya.

Kenya is slightly better off with eight points from four matches. It defeated Namibia 2-0, drew 1-1 with both Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates while losing both its matches to Papua New Guinea. After Nepal, Kenya is due to play Scotland and table-leader Netherlands.

Kenya captain Rakep Patel says his team has prepared well for the conditions expected at the Tribhuvan University ground.

“We have tried our best to replicate the conditions we would face there in Nepal by having four games against various sides in Baroda. Acclimatizing to the conditions is essential and nothing beats match practice as the conditions will be very similar in Nepal.

“We would definitely have liked to be higher in the points table but all is not lost and this makes the upcoming two games very essential to finish in the top-four, which is our desired goal. The main objective, however clichéd, is to win. Not only will it help us climb the points table but will give the young side much needed confidence for the future. There’s a lot riding on these games for us.”

Patel picked all-rounders Collins Obuya and Nehemiah Odhiambo and batsmen Irfan Karim and Alex Obanda as the players to watch in his team. He named rookie leg-spinner Pushpak Kerai as a surprise commodity and as a back-up for left-arm spinner Shem Nogech, since he expects spinner-friendly pitches for the two matches.

The squads:
Nepal: Paras Khadka (captain), Dipendra Airee, Mahaboob Alam, Binod Bhandari, Sunil Dhamala, Shakti Gauchan, Sompal Kami, Karan KC, Sandeep Lamichhane, Gyanendra Malla, Sagar Pun, Basant Regini, Aarif Sheikh, Sharad Vesawkar,

Kenya: Rakep Patel (captain), Dhiren Gondaria, Irfan Karim, Karan Kaul, Pushpak Kerai, Shem Ngoche, Alex Obanda, Collins Obuya, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Nelson Odhiambo, Lucas Oluoch, Elijah Otieno, Rushabhvardhan Patel, Gurdeep Singh.

A century from stand-in skipper Gyanendra Malla failed to avert Nepal’s defeat as it went down by 47 runs against Rajwada Cricket Team on Sunday in its first practice match of India tour at the Gautam Buddha University Ground in Greater Noida, India.

Nepal is in a week-long tour of India as part of preparation for its upcoming match against Kenya to be held on March 11 and 13 at TU ground, Kirtipur. Positive meetings held as part of process to re-admit CAN in ICC

A series of positive meetings of the Nepal Advisory Group concluded this weekend in Kathmandu as part of the process to re-admit the Cricket Association of Nepal as a member of the International Cricket Council.

The Nepal Advisory Group, which consists of various stakeholders of cricket in Nepal, was formed by the ICC to recommend amendments to the constitution of the CAN so that elections can be conducted subsequently as per the revised constitution.

At the meeting, the advisory group agreed on a Terms of Reference for the work and a community consultation process by which members of the Nepalese cricket community will give inputs for the revised Constitution.

An ICC delegation will return to Kathmandu around the time the World Cricket League Championship matches against Kenya are held on 11 and 13 March and will decide on a timetable for the adoption of the revised Constitution and subsequent elections. Following this, Nepal’s membership of the ICC will be tabled for consideration at the ICC Annual General Meeting in June.

The ICC had suspended Nepal in April last year for breach of Article 2.9 of the ICC’s Articles of Association, which prohibits government interference and requires free and fair elections. The suspension cut off funding for the CAN but Nepal was allowed to continue participating in ICC events.

Nepal edges Malaysia in U19 Asia Cup by one wicket

After more than convincing performance against Sri Lanka, Nepal U19 was clear favorite to beat Malaysia in the last league match of the U19 Asia Cup, but it turned out to be a nail-biting finish.

Chasing Malaysia’s 153, Nepal went down to 107 for 8 in 28th over before Pawan Sarraf and Anil Shah played a patient partnership of 38 runs taking Nepal close to victory. Anil was out for 32 off 66 balls and Nepal needed 9 runs off the last pair. Pawan remained unbeaten on 29 and captain Sandeep Lamichhane kept his nerve to hit the winning run to clinch victory by a wicket.

Avinash Karn, who opened, contributed 29 and DS Airee continued scoring hitting 22. Rohit Paudel (12) was only other batsman to reach double-digit in Nepal’s chase. Virandeep Singh grabbed 3 wickets for Malaysia whereas Syed Aziz, Mohd Hafiz and Mohd Amir each claimed a couple.

But Virandeep’s biggest contribution was in the batting. He single-handled Malaysia to a respectable total scoring 75 off 108 balls. The next big contributor was Mohd Hasif with 21 runs. For Nepal, Aadil Khan took 3/24 while Sandeep and DS Airee grabbed a couple each.

Heartbreaking! Sri Lanka U19 beats Nepal by 1 run

In a nail-biting finish, Sri Lanka beats Nepal by a run on the inaugural day of the Under 19 Asia Cup as Nepal suffered a heartbreaking loss after playing deservedly well to give the home team a hard fight.

Nepal was cruising at 196 for 5, before Sri Lanka dragged the game back to claim the last five wickets for 30 runs. Needing 8 runs to win in the final over with one wicket in hand, Dipendra Singh Airee hit 6 off second ball of last over to bring down the equation to 2 runs off 4 balls to win, but lost his cool playing across the line next ball that struck his pads. He was given out on 90 – last man out for Nepal as Sri Lankan players celebrated the victory.

At the end, Nepal was bowled out for 226 runs in 49.3 overs with man of the match Airee making 90, Avinash Karn 40, Aadil Khan 39 and Prakash KC 14. Sri Lanka had earlier scored 227 for 8. No other batsman reached double-digit although Airee’s cousin Kamal Singh Airee struck a six in his 9-run knock to release some pressure in last stage of the match.

Nepal began horrendously losing both openers for five runs – and it looked like a Test nation thrashing an Associate. However, Aadil ensured it was not a case batting till 21st over. But it was Airee and Karn, who with the highest partnership of the match, took Nepal in gripping distance to the victory. The pair added 84 runs together before Karn was caught on the boundary.

Earlier, Nepal invited Sri Lanka to bat first and took a wicket off the first ball. Kamal was the man who struck Vishva Chathuranga plumb. But then the home team batted steadily while Nepali bowlers bowled sensibly to ensure that the honors are even at the break.

Sri Lanka made 227 for 8 in 50 overs – probably a few runs less than they had anticipated before the match. Hasitha Boyagoda was the top contributor with 83 whereas Ashen Bandara (48 not out) and Krishan Arachchige (28) added some runs. For Nepal, Kamal took 3 wickets and Pawan Sarraf got two.

Nepal will play India on December 16.

Unbeatable Panchakanya Tez wins Wai Wai Everest Premier League T20

In one of the most exciting match of the Wai Wai Everest Premier League (EPL) Twenty20, Aasif Sheikh hit an unbeaten century to help Panchakanya Tez defeat Colors X-Factors to lift the title.

Teenager Aasif hit 111 in 64 balls with 7 fours and 8 sixes as Panchakanya Tez amassed 171/4 in 20 overs. Colors X-Factors were bundled out for 131 in 17.3 overs for a comprehensive 40-run victory for the title and Rs. 500,000 winner’s cheque.

Aasif reached his 100 from 85 with three consecutive sixes – a rare feat!

Batting first, Tez lost captain Sharad Vesawkar (2) cheaply in the first over bowled by Avinash Karn. But Aasif was flying high adding 31 with Karan KC (5) and 27 with Prithu Baskota (8) before his brother Aarif joined him.

Aarif scored 23 runs in 20 balls with 2 fours and a six in a 47-run fifth wicket partnership. Sonu Tamang (12 not out in 8 balls) partnered Aasif for 64 runs and saw some fireworks towards the end of the innings. In 19th over, Amar Singh Routela went for 26 runs – three sixes by Aasif and one by Sonu.

In reply, X-Factors needed early fireworks which didn’t come. Fajlur Rahman went out in first over without scoring and Hari Shankar Shah for 14 in 3rd over – both falling to Sushil Kandel. Bhuwan Karki got Routela (9) in 4th over to make things worse for X-Factors who were then reeling at 24/3.

X-Factors captain Gyanendra Malla tried to revive the innings but he could only mutter 47 off 32 balls before being out leg before to Dipendra Singh Airee. Rajesh Pulami scored 37 off 35 balls but all other batsmen were out cheaply trying to hit out to meet rising required run-rate.

Karan KC was most successful bowler with 3/35 whereas Kandel and Vesawkar each grabbed a couple of wickets. Vesawkar’s wickets were last two wickets claimed in a space of three balls. Aasif, with help of final’s innings, finished top scorer of the event with 220 runs in 6 innings while Kandel finished top of bowlers with 12 wickets.

Aasif won the Emerging Player of the Tournament and the Player of the Tournament went to Jagdamba Rhinos Sompal Kami for his 125 runs and 6 wickets. Former Indian international Ajay Jadeja and Chaudhary Group’s Nirvana Chaudhary awarded the winners.

Captain Paras leads from front for historic victory over Netherlands

Paras Khadka’s all-round star turn propelled Nepal to a 19-run victory over the Netherlands in the ICC World Cricket League Championship match between the two sides at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen on August 15.

Asked to bat first, Nepal benefitted from good hands from Khadka, Gyanendra Malla and Sagar Pun to reach 217 for 9 from its 50 overs, the total being kept down largely because of Michael Rippon’s returns of 4 for 35.

In response, the Netherlands stuttered to 21 for 3 with Khadka, the Nepal skipper, picking up a couple of wickets, before the middle order stepped up to the task. Nepal, however, picked up wickets at crucial junctures to ensure the run chase wouldn’t press on before bowling the home side out for 198 in 48.3 overs.

Roelof van der Merwe topscored with 56 from 61 balls for The Netherlands.

Following the loss, the Netherlands got to 12 points from eight matches, giving it the No. 1 spot on the eight-team table, while Nepal was on sixth position with six points from eight games. With Scotland left to face United Arab Emirates on Tuesday to complete its eight-game quota, and four other teams left with two games each, the positions on the table can vary by the time the tournament comes to a close in November.

Nepal, which suffered a nine-wicket loss at the hands of the Netherlands a couple of days ago, came into the tie with intent, exemplified by its captain. Early in the innings, the possibility of its batting unit coming short was very much a threat as it lost three wickets for 65 runs despite Malla’s 52-ball 39, but a stirring 118-run stand between Khadka and Pun ensured it had runs for its bowlers to bowl with.

Khadka’s dismissal for 84 from 94 balls, with seven fours and a six, and the fall of Pun (45 in 78 balls) within seven runs of each other didn’t help Nepal’s cause, and its lower order fizzled away as Rippon and Ahsan Malik (2-34) kept their calm.

The Nepali fans can´t stop cheering after their team beat The Netherlands in the 2nd WCL match in Amstelveen.

In its reply, by losing three early wickets, the Netherlands would have felt the pressure, but the experienced Roelof van der Merwe and young Max O’Dowd brought it back into the game.

Van der Merwe made a hard-hitting 56 from 61 and O’Dowd contributed with 35 scored over 95 deliveries, but it was Tim Gruijters’s 60-ball 44 that truly made it a nail-biting affair. Aided by Tim van der Gugten’s 30-ball 36, Gruijters took the Netherlands towards the target.

But Gruijters’s dismissal to Basant Regmi in the 48th over with the Netherlands needing 25 runs from 16 balls meant the host would need a nerveless display from the tail. Unfortunately, that never came.

Nepal has Sompal Kami, Khadka and Regmi to thank for restricting the Netherlands as each of the three bowlers bagged two wickets and gave away less than five runs per over.

Netherlands bowls out Nepal for comprehensive victory

Netherlands strengthened its position at the top of the ICC World Cricket Championship League with a seven-wicket win against Nepal at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen on Saturday (August 13).

Tim van der Gugten and Michael Rippon returned identical figures of 3 for 21 as Nepal, put into bat, was bowled out for 94 in 38.1 overs – Nepal’s lowest total. Netherlands chased down the target in 16.5 overs. The defeat is third in Europe for Nepal who had lost both matches against Scotland.

Nepal’s lowest score was 167/10 against Scotland in their first round match that Nepal lost by nine wickets last year in July.

Overall, Nepal lost five matches out of seven in the championship as they also had lost both matches against PNG in the second round before beating Namibia at the TU Stadium in Kirtipur in April in the third round.

In today’s match, Nepali batsmen failed to put good show against discipline bowling of the opposition who invited the visitor to put runs on the board first.

Opener Anil Mandal top scored 20 runs facing 39 balls, while Sharad Vesawkar, who faced 71 balls, was second highest scorer for Nepal with 14 runs. Tail-ender Sompal Kami (12 off 28) and opener Gyanendra Malla (11 off 12) were other batsmen to contribute in double digits.

Skipper Paras Khadka got duck out by Timm van der Merwe who picked up three wickets giving away only 21 runs in eight overs. He also maintained a maiden over.

Similarly, Michael Rippon also claimed three wickets as Nepal flopped in batting. Rippon , who maintained two maiden, conceded 21 runs in 9.1 overs .

Netherlands lost Rippon early in the chase, but a 57-run stand between Stephan Myburgh and Wesley Barresi put the team in a commanding position. Barresi fell for 37, and was followed by Ben Cooper, but Myburgh’s unbeaten 33 took Netherlands home with 199 balls to spare.

Netherlands now has 12 points from seven matches, while Nepal is placed sixth on the table with four points, also from seven matches.

The two teams will play against each other at the same venue again on Monday.

Nepal’s historic Lords’ appearance brings victory against MCC

Every time Nepal cricket gets a global stage, it leaves no stone unturned to prove that it has the potential to become a global cricketing power. It was the same story on July 19, when Nepal XI took Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at the Lords’ Cricket Ground, also known as the Mecca of Cricket.

For the record, Nepal bowled out MCC for 176 to register a 41-run win after scoring 217 for 8 in 50 overs. But, the match result isn’t as important as Nepal’s appearance at the Lords’ as it’s an honor & recognition for an Associate nation whose cricket board remains suspended by ICC.

“All those years [of playing cricket], we never dreamed that we will get a match at Lords’,” Nepal’s captain Paras Khadka said. “It’s a platform for us to showcase what Nepal cricket is and the talents.”

“To play at the ground where cricket originated is a historic moment and we have been able to give a message to the world from this platform,” Khadka said after the match. “Country like Nepal won’t get an opportunity to play at Lords always, but we got an opportunity and we proved ourselves.”

More than 3,000 Nepalis and Nepal-supporting English people from all over England attended the match played as a part of the celebrations of 200 years of diplomatic relations between Nepal and the UK. The Lords’ live streamed the match on YouTube which regularly had more than 10,000 live viewers. “The fans are our biggest motivators, everywhere we go in the world, they come to support us,” Khadka had added.

On a hot sunny day and a slow pitch, used for the England – Pakistan Test match, Nepal won the toss and elected to bat first. Nepal’s batsmen were able to get a competitive total although they couldn’t convert a good start into a big knock.

Opener Gyanendra Malla gave Nepal a decent start and played an anchoring role scoring 39 whereas captain Khadka scored 30. Sharad Veswakar (27), Sagar Pun (26), and Raju Rijal (24) all got the start but couldn’t convert. Towards the end, Basant Regmi (24 not out) and Sompal Kami (20) ensured that Nepal reaches past 200 with their 42-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Fast bowler Chad Barrett took 2/35 in 10 overs, while captain and off-spinner Keith Dutch took 2/36.

In reply, MCC’s decent start reaching 35 for none was spoiled by spinners. Right-arm off-spinner Sagar Pun picked up 3/35 whereas left-arm spinner Basant Regmi and pacer Sompal ripped the tail with 2 wickets each.

Only opener George Adair batted brilliantly in the chase and kept his side in the hunt for a victory. He got a 100 off 122 balls in a patient knock and briefly threatened to pull off the match in favor of MCC before failing to do so. The only other batsman to reach some score was Richard Wilkinson who got 20.

ICC Delegation to Visit Nepal

The International Cricket Council’s Full Council meeting in Edinburgh, England on Thursday unanimously ratified the suspension of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar also announced that an ICC delegation will visit Nepal before October this year to assess the situation.

The 53-member Full Council also unanimously ratified the suspension of the USA Cricket Association (USACA).

Manohar announced that ICC delegations comprising Board Directors and senior management will visit the Nepal and USA to meet with the relevant stakeholders and provide an update during the October meetings.

shashank-manohar-icc-300x225-2245805“Both Nepal and the US are important Members of the ICC as they have tremendous talent and potential. The ICC, as part of its game and market development strategy, will continue to provide the countries with as much support as possible so that they can put in place good governance and cricket structures,” Manohar said.

“An ICC delegation will visit Nepal and will meet with the Nepal government and cricket officials,” he added. “While I will lead an ICC team to the USA to meet with various stakeholders in that market and help them lay the foundation for the effective development of the sport (at grass roots and international level) and implementation of a governance structure that unifies the entire cricket community in the USA.”

CAN was suspended in April 2016.

The Full Council also noted the Associate and Affiliate Members’ decision as a group to re-elect Singapore’s Imran Khawaja and Francois Erasmus of Namibia for another two years as their representatives to the Board, while Neil Speight was replaced by Cricket Ireland chairman ‎Ross McCollum.

The ICC’s Full Council comprises 10 Full Members, 38 Associate Members and 57 Affiliate Members (who are collectively represented by five regional Affiliate Member representatives).

Clarke invites Sandeep to train in Australia

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has reportedly invited Nepali young leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane to train in his academy – the Michael Clarke Cricket Academy (MCCA) – in Sydney, Australia.

“Clarke has invited me to play in his Academy, I have proposed September,” the 16-year-old spinner told Kantipur daily. “It’s a big opportunity for me to play in MCCA; it would be very good experience and I will learn a lot.”

Clarke was impressed with Sandeep – who was reported as Nepali Share Warne after his bowling in the U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh – while captaining Kowloon Cantons in the HK T20 Blitz last week. Sandeep played under his captaincy.

During the tournament, Sandeep developed a good rapport with World Cup winning Clarke which was evident in their conversation on Twitter. Clarke called Sandeep ‘little champion’ and said that he would see him soon.

sandeep-clarke-e1465011726426-500x507-3581861

According to Sandeep, Clarke praised his game and infused a hope that he could be playing in the Big Bash – the Australian T20 championship. “Clarke said if I continue playing well, I could be playing Big Bash and I am very excited about that,” Sandeep told Kantipur.

Sandeep said that he learned a lot from the Australian legend in Hong Kong. “I could play with Clarke – I can’t explain in words the experience of sharing dressing room with Clarke,” he said. “He also taught me on bowl technique, follow through and bowling action.”

MCCA runs 5-day cricket training camps every year with one-to-one coaching by Michael Clarke and his team. This year two camps are planned first from September 26-30 and second, October 3-7.

Clarke, 36, is considered one of the best batsmen of cricket having captained Australia after Ricky Ponting and leading the team to the No. 1 Test ranking and a World Cup title. A chronic back injury caused him retire early.

ICC plans two-tier Test cricket; Opportunity for Associate nations

If ICC chief executive officer David Richardson has his way, Nepal could be playing the second-tier Test cricket as early as 2019. Richardson revealed that ICC could unveil plans for the introduction of two divisions in Test cricket, and, potentially, a number of new Test nations within a next few weeks.

The ESPN Cricinfo reported that ‘promotion and relegation could be introduced into Test cricket’ as Richardson believed that ‘Test cricket required added ‘meaning and context’ if it is to survive.

Accepting the diminishing returns of current bilateral series, Richardson offered the prospect of Test status to the likes of Nepal, Ireland and Afghanistan, cricket’s most popular website reported.

“There’s a general realisation now that, if we’re going to keep Test cricket going well into the future, we can’t just say it’s going to survive on its own,” Richardson said while speaking to promote the 2017 Champions Trophy. “Unless we can give some meaning to these series beyond the rankings and a trophy, then interest in Test cricket will continue to waiver. The same applies if we allow uncompetitive Test cricket to take place too often.”

“If we really want Test cricket to survive, we can’t have the number of Test teams diminishing. We have to create a proper competition structure which provides promotion and relegation and opportunities to get to the top.

“The beauty of leagues is that, in theory, you will have a more competitive competition and teams playing each other that are of a more equal standard.”

While the details of the plan remain open to debate – Richardson hopes they will be agreed by the end of this month – there is a favored option, involving the introduction of a top division of seven teams and a second division of five teams. It is likely that the plan would see one team promoted and relegated in each two-year cycle, though it remains possible that a second team could be promoted if the ICC embraced a play-off model with the sixth team in Division One playing the second team in Division Two.

Catalysts behind change

There are two catalysts to the changing mood of an ICC board who, only a few months ago, appeared to have little concern for any interests beyond their own. The first is the election of the new chairman, Shashank Manohar, who seems genuinely committed to growing cricket as a global game and running the ICC as a governing body for the good of all 105 members rather than a favored few, the site reported.

The second is the diminishing financial value of bilateral series to the Full Member boards, which has allowed Manohar fertile ground on which to plant his ideas.

Opportunities for Associate nations

The combination has offered the prospect of unprecedented opportunities for Associate nations in the next few years. “The new chairman has gone out of his way to reverse the sense that the ‘Big Three’ are in control,” Richardson said. “There is a bigger desire to regard the ICC as an organisation with 105 members, not just 10 Full Members who are a select, secluded club with no one else allowed in. We want to be more encompassing and allow opportunities for Associate Members to graduate.

“We have 105 members at the moment and we want 105 members to be able to play T20 internationals. Obviously not all against each other at the same time but everybody should want to play the T20 format and it will appeal to all of our members. Then the better ones, the top 30 to 35, would graduate to the 50-over game and be involved in global competitions catering to approximately that number of teams.

“And then Test cricket is towards the other end of the spectrum, where the top 18 teams perhaps are playing a multi-day format of the game, be it the Intercontinental Cup or part of a Test league.

“Countries that you never thought would have ambitions to play multi-day cricket actually have got the potential. Countries like Nepal, Afghanistan and Ireland are keen. But Ireland and Nepal aren’t getting any opportunities. Zimbabwe hardly play. West Indies are focusing more on T20 cricket. Creating a competition and a financial model that underpins it, it will allow them the resources to fund a team and provide incentives for their players to be available to play Test cricket for them.”

ICC sets conditions to lift CAN suspension

David Richardson, the Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has written a formal letter to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on the recent decision to suspend the cricket governing body of Nepal.

In the letter to Chatur Bahadur Chand, the ‘elected committee’ President of CAN, dated 22 May 2016, Richardson pointed out reasons for suspension, the consequences of suspension and the conditions to be satisfied by CAN in order for the suspension to be lifted.

The ICC pointed out that CAN violated the Article 2.9 (a) by holding a disputed election and government (National Sports Council) interfering with CAN by forming an ad-hoc committee to control and administer CAN.

Until the suspension is lifted, the CAN will be deprived of all its rights as an ICC member that includes, but not limited to, no ICC funding, no representation in ICC meetings, and no rights to determine whether cricket matches and events stages in Nepal should have the status of approved or disapproved cricket. “Instead the ICC will make that determination,” the letter added.

“[] so that cricket players within Nepal do not suffer, the ICC Board has decided in its discretion that the Nepal national representative teams will not be denied any participation opportunities that would normally be offered to them during CAN’s suspension,” it added.

Conditions for lifting suspension

The CAN is ‘required to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the ICC Board, by reference of detailed and specific evidence, that the ICC’s concerns about the apparent failure to have CAN office-bearers elected by a free and fair election and government interference have been properly addressed, understood and remedied in full’.

This means that the ICC wants another CAN election which could be under the oversight of the ICC delegation, without NSC playing a interfering role.

The ICC delegation will travel to Nepal for assessment before October 2016. The delegation will provide further report to ICC Board in it’s meeting in October.

The ICC has also added a further condition for the reinstatement of membership. “CAN will be required to demonstrate again that it meets all the ICC’s Associate membership criteria, funding policy requirement and all other relevant rules and regulations,” the letter further states.

From suspension to the reinstatement, ‘the ICC will continue to oversee selection, management, operations and finances of Nepal’s national teams in accordance with the previously agreed arrangements’.

Dream Fapla releases design for proposed international stadium

Dream Fapla, the campaign for the construction of the Fapla International Cricket Stadium in Dhangadi of west Nepal, released the design of the proposed stadium.

“The master plan of Fapla International Cricket Stadium is out,” Subash Shahi, the convener of Dream Fapla, said. “We are in the turning point of history being made, the revolution in cricket in Nepal.”

falpa2-500x221-6218762

Dream Fapla is crowdsourcing funds for the construction of the stadium with a dream to identify Dhangadi as the city of cricket. “Dream Fapla is the project of people which should run in the Public- Private Partnership model,” wrote Shahi on his Facebook. “Today, there lies some hurdle ahead. We will always keep fighting until our goal of international stadium is realized.”

Shahi also appealed all to unite for the stadium. “We request every Nepalese to unite for this noble cause which will determine the future of our country, our kids, our economy and most importantly, if we make our dream come true, it will be proved that development is possible through the participation of people- locals, businesses, corporate houses, Nepalese living abroad and yes, there is the role of government.”

fapla-500x228-6664504

The design consists of a play ground, Gym, locker for players, swimming pool, training house, parapet in three sides of the grounds, VIP Stand, media centre, and accommodation area for the players among other facilities. The stadium will have a capacity of 40,000 spectators.

The project has not been without hurdles as the government agencies with the responsibility of developing the sports in the region had in past said the stadium couldn’t be built as it’s planned, owing to the ownership issue.

National team skipper Paras Khadka shared the designs posted by Shahi on Facebook and said that he was confident of the project on time.
