Nepali Cricket’s Crashing Dreams

Every time Nepali national cricket team leaves the country, it instills high hopes in all Nepalis. There are always opportunities and there is always somewhere up to go; and normally a step ahead means dreams coming true. But, unfortunately, the dream always crash down with a defeat in the crucial match after a series of impressive wins. This has been a story of Nepali cricket for the last six years.

Nepal has lost four semifinals in the last four years and every defeat has deprived Nepal of an opportunity to go higher in the world cricket. In 2005, Fiji defeated Nepal in the semifinal of the World Cup Qualifying Series Division II that ended Nepal’s hopes of playing in the main World Cup qualifiers. Continue reading

The results on Tuesday confirmed semifinal berth for Nepal and United Arab Emirates (UAE) while Hong Kong and Afghanistan have a foot into the semifinal going into the last round of match on Wednesday.

Nepal put a foot on the semifinal of the ACC Trophy Elite 2008 registering a six-wicket win over Singapore on Monday at the Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Vice-captain Paras Khadka scored unbeaten 71 and partnered Shakti Gauchan for unbeaten 62 runs to take Nepal to a convincing victory in 40.5 overs chasing Singapore’s total of 155/9.

Gyanendra Malla and Sarad Vesawkar shared a record partnership as Nepal registered it’s second win in as many days beating Qatar by seven wickets at the Royal Military College Ground of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the ACC Trophy Elite 2008.

For last four years, the national cricket team has won all but crucial matches; and when they left for ACC Elite Cup on Tuesday, the buzz was whether they would be able to break the jinx this time.

Nepal grabbed two awards at the inaugural Asian Cricket Council awards in a glittering function in Karachni, Pakistan on Saturday evening. Paras Khadka, who captained U-19 team in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup and Youth World Cup, and Nary Thapa, woman team’s captain, received awards as emerging Asian players.

Paras won the Best Emerging Asian Cricketer of the Year while Nary received the Best Emerging Asian Woman Cricketer of the Year. The two awards were only awards for the associate nations. Continue reading

Nepal Enters WCL Div V Semifinal

Nepal entered the semifinals of the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament beating Vanuatu by 137 runs at the Victoria College Ground on Tuesday to record its fourth straight victory.

Allrounder Mehboob Alam followed up Sunday’s record-breaking feat with another sterling performance Monday to guide Nepal to an easy 108-run win over Norway in its third match of the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament at the Farmers Field ground in Jersey.

Basant Regmi and Mehboob Alam each grabbed three wickets as Nepal began the World Cricket League Division 5 campaign strongly defeating Germany by 7 wickets at the Les Quennevais Ground, Jersey on Friday.

You need more grounds: Ijaz Ahmed

Ijaz Ahmed, former Pakistan Test and ODI player with experience of four World Cups, was in Nepal as the coach of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy. Ahmed. 40 was dubbed the Axeman for his stance and chopping down of the ball outside off-stump with dominant bottom hand grip. He played 250 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 60 Test matches from 1987 to 2001.

Sarfraz Ahmed displayed a brilliant batting performance as visiting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy registered an impressive 109-run victory over Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) XI at the TU Ground on Friday.
