On the eve of Nepali women’s first ever international match, Nepal Philatelic Society has issued a special commemorative cover to celebrate the historic participation.

Nepal is scheduled to play Thailand in the inaugural ACC Women’s Cricket Tournament 2007 in Johar Bahru, Malaysia on Wednesday. As Nepal, Thailand will also be playing their first international event.

Led by Nary Thapa, Nepal hopes to begin with a victory. “This is a historic tour and we want to make it more memorable by returning victorious,” Nary told NepalCricket.com before leaving for Malaysia.

“I hope that the girls will bring back some amount of success in their first attempt,” Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) president Binaya Raj Pandey said during the issuing of the cover in Kathmandu.

A total of 500 copies of the commemorative cover have been published. The cover is complete with the five-rupee stamp issued earlier this year to celebrate Nepal’s success in men’s cricket.

Shreedhar Gautam, the director general of Postal Service Department put the first stamp on the cover in a ceremony chaired by Pandey. “Sports especially cricket has played an important role for the pride of the nation,” Gautam said. “I hope that the women team will be successful.”

Society’s acting chairman Jay Rijal said the society was interested in holding a sports stamp exhibition and expected support from CAN to make it a reality. “We want to hold the exhibition of national and international sports stamps,” he said.

Though it was a laudworthy effort, the use of foreign photo in the cover saddeded many cricket fans.
