U-19: Kathmandu, Bhairahawa win

The opening day of the Wai Wai U-19 National League saw some extraordinary performances as Region No 3 (Kathmandu) and Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) registered big victories.

Subash Khakurel scored 140 as Kathmandu amassed 322/9 in 50 overs to beat Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) by 144 runs at the IOE Ground, Pulchowk. At TU Ground, Bibek Chaudhary took 7 wickets to bowl out Region No 2 (Birgunj) for 61 in 19.1 overs as Bhairahawa win by 60 runs. Continue reading

Nepal ranked top team in ACC ranking

Nepal is ranked the top team in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Non-Test Playing Nations Tournament Ranking published on December 15.

Binaya Raj Pandey, the president of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and ACC vice-president, said that a meeting of the ACC Executive Committee in Dhaka on December 12 endorsed the ranking. Continue reading

In 2001, when Roy Luke Dias arrived in Nepal as the national cricket coach, nobody knew what exactly the tiny Himalayan nation would achieve under him and for how long he would stay. He was the coach of Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup in England, and that fact alone made us proud to have him.

I always believed Dias chose to be Nepal´s coach due to an ego. He was fired immediately after the 1999 World Cup for Sri Lanka´s bad performance, and also because Dias, who is a strict disciplinarian, criticized star players for not playing well.

He was labeled an incapable coach, and the only way he could prove himself was by shocking them with his abilities. Continue reading

Asiad: Nepal made Sri Lanka toil for win

Nepal nearly pulled out a shocking result in Asian Games 2010 cricket against Sri Lanka before losing the quarterfinal match by two wickets on Wednesday.

Nepal enters quarterfinals of Asiad

Nepal defeated Maldives by 75 runs in the Asian Games cricket on Monday to confirm a berth in quarterfinals.

Although Nepal lost to Hong Kong by 30 runs on Sunday, heavy win against Maldives improved the run-rate and regardless of the result of the match between Hong Kong and Maldives, Nepal will finish among top two of the group.

If Hong Kong defeat Maldives, Nepal as group runners-up will play Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The group winner will play Afghanistan. If Maldives defeats Hong Kong, then run-rate will come into play. Continue reading

Asiad: Hong Kong beats Nepal

Hong Kong defeated Nepal by 30 runs in the Asian Games 2010. Both Nepal and Hong Kong have a game against Maldives and if Hong Kong beats Maldives it will proceed for the quartefinals against Afghanistan.

Nepali women cricket team ended the Asian Games 2010 campaign with dismal performance with just one win in three matches and were unable to reach the semifinals.

Government honors woman cricketers

Just before the Tihar festival, the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship winning team received a round of accolades and cash prizes as the government, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and sponsors Wai Wai provided cash rewards to the players.

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal awarded the squad with the highest cash prize in the history of Nepali cricket at his official residence at Baluwatar. PM Nepal awarded the 14 players with a cash prize of Rs 100,000 each, while coach Samson Jung Thapa was given Rs 50,000 along with letter of appreciation. Nepali girls defended the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship title defeating Bhutan by five wickets at the Indian Association Ground, Singapore.

Nepal cruises to final beating UAE

Defending champions Nepal inched closer to the defense of their ACC U-19 Women´s Championship title on Monday defeating UAE by 81 runs in the semifinal hed in Yorker in Singapore.

Nary Thapa once again played a captain´s knock, winning her third player-of-the-match award for her record-breaking innings that helped Nepal reach 156/3 in 25 overs. UAE, who were penalized an over due to slow over rate, could only manage 75/7 in 24 overs. Continue reading

Well Done Girls!

The Dashain could not have started better for the cricket lovers. For the eve of it has been good. For the first day of the festival has come after three consecutive victories for Nepali women. That’s a good omen, even if we’re talking about the age group players.

Nepal beats Qatar, enters semi

Defending champions Nepal entered the semifinals of the ACC U-19 Women´s Championship cricket defeating Qatar in the last league match by 49 runs in Singapore.

Nepal closes in to semi beating Singapore

Nepal registered third victory in the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship cricket tournament defeating Singapore by 70 runs at Yorker on Thursday.

Winning toss, Nepal elected to bat and scored 159/2 in 25 overs. Hosts Singapore were restricted to 89/9. After the win, Nepal is atop Group A with three wins and only a series of results not in favor can deny Nepal a place in semifinal. Continue reading

Nepali women continued its winning streak as they beat Kuwait by 7 wickets in the second day of the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship in Singapore.

Nepal began defense of the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship in style at Ceylon Sports Club (CSC) in Singapore defeating Hong Kong by 79 runs.

Good bye, Roy!

If you’ve followed this week’s sports pages and talk shows on TV closely, it would appear as if Nepali cricket is about to change. The scenes are changing and changing fast.

We are about to see the departmental teams (Police Club and Armed Police Force) in cricket. There are now 8 cricketing regions, up from existing 6. Not much needs to be said about the departmental teams and their contribution to Nepali sport. And to everybody’s excitement, APF have announced their intentions for the domestic league by signing the top names in Nepali cricket already. Continue reading

Shakti, Sanjam dropped from Asiad

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) dropped vastly experienced Shakti Gauchan and Sanjam Regmi from the 14-member squad to represent Nepal in the 16th Asian Games from November 12-27 in Guangzhou, China.

Shakti, Sanjam and Manjeet Shrestha, who traveled with the team to Italy for the ICC World Cricket League Division IV in August, left space for youngster Prithu Baskota, Binod Bhandari and Naresh Budhayer. Continue reading

CAN not to extend Dias’ contract

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Wednesday decided not to extend the contract of long-term coach Roy Luke Dias when it ends in December.

Paras Khadka won the Player of the Year (Male) award of the nation’s biggest Pulsar Sports Award 2066 for his performance during the World Cricket League Division 5 and ACC Trophy.

Nepal beat Tanzania by 10 wickets to claim third position in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 4 at Medicina, Italy on Saturday.

100 Wkts: Mehboob’s Milestone

Mehboob Alam is already a golden record book of Nepali cricket; and the 29-year-old allrounder from Rajbiraj put yet another feather on his cap Wednesday by becoming the first Nepali bowler to claim 100 international one-day wickets.
