Birgunj stun Biratnagar; Bhairahawa win
Region No 2 Birgunj stunned Region No 1 Biratnagar in the opening match of the Boost Under-16 National League Cricket Tournament as Region No 4 Bhairahawa beat Region No 6 Baitadi. In a match played at the IOE Ground, Birgunj defeated Biratnagar by 3 wickets while Bhairahawa won by 44 runs at the TU Cricket Ground. Early blow put Biratnagar on the backfoot after they won the toss and elected to bat first. Two run outs and a brilliant bolwing by Birgunj captain Avinash Karn put the Eastern side at 7/4 in 2.4 overs and they did not recover good from then onwards.

Sharad excluded for WCL Div 5
Sharad Vesawkar will not be showcasing his batting when Nepal competes in the World Cricket League Division 5 in Kathmandu in February 2010 as Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) axed him from the national team. CAN named 18-member squad for the closed-camp training and Vesawkar is the only name missing from the national team ranked fifth in the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup in UAE last month.

Gyanendra to lead Nepal in SAG
Gyanendra Malla will lead the Nepali cricket team in the South Asian Games next year, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced on Sunday. CAN also named 18 players for the event to be played from January 29 to February 8, 2010 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
28 cricketers for SAG closed-camp
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) named 28-member preliminary squad for the closed-camp training for the South Asian Games. The camp will begin on December 12 in Kathmandu.
Pepsi, Standard Chartered to sponsor senior team
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) signed a five-year deal with Pepsi and Standard Chartered Bank for the sponsorship of the senior national team and one-day as well as Twenty20 national tournaments. According to the deal, worth Rs. 3m, Pepsi will be the sponsor of the team while Standard Chartered will be the co-sponsor. The deal has to be renewed annually.

CAN releases annual program, budget
[Updated with annual calendar] Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) passed the annual program and budget in an executive committee meeting on Wednesday, the association said in a press release. CAN also added that Varun Beverage, the producer of Pepsi soft drinks in Nepal, and Standard Chartered Bank will sponsor the senior national team and event this year. Last year, Springwood brand of Surya Nepal was the main sponsor of the event.

Raj Kumar leaves national team
Leg-spinner Raj Kumar Pradhan, who was in closed training Camp for ACC T-20 Cricket tournament, quit national team on Tuesday for foreign employment opportunities in Qatar. Raj Kumar will work and play for Qatar Al Hasan Becker for the next two years.

Passport holders only for Asian Games
Cricket will make its debut at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in November next year, and the eligibility rules that states that only passport holders can play for a nation leave some of the regions cricket teams in somewhat of a selection quandary.

Mehboob, Keshari win PoY awards
Mehboob Alam and Keshari Chaudhary bagged awards at the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) Pulsar Player of the Year award ceremony in Kathmandu. Mehboob picked the NSJF Pulsar Special Award while Keshari won the NSJF Pulsar Youth Player of the Year award.

Cricket dominates NSJF PoY nominations
Cricket dominated the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) Pulsar Player of the Year Awards nominations unveiled on Thursday. Among 20 nominations for four categories, cricket has six nominations – three for youth player of the year, two for coach of the year and one for female player of the year. Unfortunately, no cricketer was nominated for the Male Player of the Year.

Nepali umpires making history at WCL Div 6
Pepsi World Cricket League Division 6 got underway in Singapore from Saturday. In the first day’s play between Norway and Botswana, which Norway won by 19 runs, Sanjay Gurung, a Nepali umpire, not only made his debut in an ICC event but also fulfilled his cherished dream. Gurung accompanied world number one umpire Simon Taufel in the match. Taufel, whom ICC adjudged world’s best umpire since 2004, was in Singapore as tournament inspector but later decided to play his role as field umpire in the match.

CAN secretary Pandey expires
The secretary of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Shashidutta Pandey, died on Saturday morning. Pandey, 58, was suffering from jaundice and died in the course of treatment at the Medicare Hospital, Chabahil at about 6:45 am. He was admitted to the hospital at midnight Friday.

Cricketers meet Prime Minister
A delegation of cricket players met Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at his office in Singha Durbar requesting the government to support in development of cricket. Captain Binod Das handed over a memorandum to PM Nepal that demanded jobs for players, making of cricket teams in Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army, facilities to cricketers equivalent to other national players and initiative to develop physical infrastructure.

CAN must change structure: Warnapura
Sri Lanka’s first captain in Test and ODIs, Bandula Warnapura, also Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) Development Manager, is in Nepal to visit cricket facilities of the country. Warnapura, 56, is responsible for development of cricket in Asian region. In his second visit to Nepal, first one during ACC U-17 Elite Cup, he accompanied Andre Faichy, the International Cricket Council (ICC) event manager, who was here to assess the facilities for the ICC World Cricket League Division V event to be held in January 2010. ICC confident of successful WCL Div 5
Andrew Faichney, International Cricket Council’s Development Events Manager, said that ICC is confident that the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5 is going to be a huge success. At the conclusion of his three-day visit to Nepal to assess the facilities for the January 2010 event, Faichney added that ICC had put a lot of trust in past in Nepal looking at the nation’s love for cricket.

Maya Rawat wins Dashrath Award
Cricketer Maya Rawat of Kanchanpur was felicitated with Martyr Dashrath Chand Best Player Award in a ceremony in Kathmandu on Wednesday. Minister for Youth and Sports Ganesh Nepali gave away the prize. Maya, who scored 117 runs for the national cricket team during their triumph at the ACC U-19 Women´s Cricket Tournament in December, 2008 in Thailand.

ICC medals for 5 Nepali officials
International Cricket Council (ICC) has conferred five Nepali cricket officials by the ICC Centenary Medals for their long contribution in the development of cricket. Those who received the medals are CAN president Binaya Raj Pandey, former vice-president TB Shah, secretary Shashi Dutta Pandey, vice-president Naresh Shrestha and vice-president Upendra Prasad Bhattarai.

3 Nepali Umpires in WCL Div VI
International Cricket Council (ICC) has named three Nepali umpires to officiate matches of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 tournament in Singapore. Buddhi Bahadur Pradhan, Binaya Jha and Sanjay Gurung will officiate in the tournament that is a part of the 2015 World Cup with top two teams moving to Division 5 to be held in Nepal January next year. The Division 6 is scheduled from August 29 to September 5.

Music video to celebrate ICC’s 100 years released
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) released a promotional music video to celebrate the ICC Centenary Year 2009 in association with Nepal Tourism Board (Nepal Tourism Board). The video, produced by CAN and NTB on request of International Cricket Council, is directed by Surya Thapaliya. Pramod Kharel sang the song, Mero Desh Pyaro Nepal (My Country Lovely Nepal), written and composed by himself.

Squad named for ACC Women T20
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced the 18-member preliminary squad from among the 25 players in the closed-camp training for the ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship. For the first time since Nepal began international participation, Nary Thapa will not be captaining the side as Ritu Kanaujiya has been named the captain for the side.

Cricket officially added for Asiad 2010
Cricket officially became an Asian Games sport Wednesday when it was approved by the Olympic Council of Asia, with India and Pakistan pledging to send their best available teams. It will make its debut in Guangzhou next year.

A group of cricket enthusiasts from United Kingdom wrote their names on the world record books for highest game of cricket ever played and the highest altitude ever recorded for a field sports by completing a Twenty20 game at Gorak Shep, near Mount Everest on Tuesday.

MCC concludes tour with huge defeat
Touring Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) saw the best of Nepali teams in the three-day match that ended on Sunday at the TU Cricket Ground in an innings and 116-run win for the hosts. CAN XI displayed brilliant bowling performance to bowl out MCC for 131 in the first innings and 146 in the second innings. In between, guided by Gyanendra Malla’s 141, CAN XI declared the innings at 393/6.
